Ukraine is building 2,000 kilometers of fortifications across three lines of defense, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on 11 March, following a meeting of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s Headquarters.
Ukraine has allocated UAH 17.5 billion ($466 million) for the construction of fortifications, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced in January, saying that it was a “record amount.”
In a recent meeting with military commanders and ministers, Zelenskyy addressed crucial matters concerning the situation at the front, weaponry, and the construction of fortifications.
According to Zelenskyy’s Telegram post, Denys Shmyhal presented a report on the progress of building new defensive lines. The President emphasized the significance of this task, stating, “The defense in three lines with a length of 2000 kilometers is a large-scale task, but the pace is good now. I count on timely completion.”
The meeting also covered detailed briefings from the command regarding the situation on the battlefield. Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, Chief of the General Staff Anatolii Barhylevych, and local commanders presented reports. The discussions included the Kupiansk, Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Mariinka directions, as well as marine infantry operations.
Additionally, the meeting addressed the provision of necessary supplies to the front, with reports from Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov and Minister of Strategic Industries Oleksandr Kamyshin.

Ukraine is building 2,000 kilometers of fortifications, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Telegram on March 11, following a meeting with military commanders and ministers.
In the fall of 2023, the authorities received criticism for slow progress on fortifying defensive lines. A working group was established in November to coordinate fortification efforts.
Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal reported in January that the government had allocated around Hr 17.5 billion ($466 million) for the construction of fortifications, calling it a "record amount."

Zelensky said that during the meeting, he received a report from Shmyhal on the "pace of construction of new defense lines."
The construction of 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles) of fortifications across three lines of defense is "a massive task, but the pace is good," Zelensky said.
Zelensky said he also received "detailed reports from the command regarding the situation on the battlefield," as well as reports from Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and Strategic Industries Minister Oleksandr Kamyshin regarding ammunition supplies to the front line.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on March 7 that Ukrainian troops are building fortifications in expectation of a Russian offensive in the spring, though there are worries that the progress is not fast enough.

The Wall project under which Ukraine has been building a wall on the border with Russia has been completed in Kharkiv region, Ukraine's northeast.
"As of today, the degree of this project's readiness corresponds to the funding received – we've built engineering structures and combat modules. The facilities in Kharkiv region are almost completed," Chief of the Ukrainian Border Service Petro Tsyhykal told the news portal 112.ua.

According to him, most of the work is to be done in Luhansk region in the east, in Sumy region in the northeast, and in Chernihiv region in the north.
"Unfortunately, the politicization of this project has a significant impact on the pace of its implementation, but we understand that this is a matter of national security, so we need to complete it under any conditions," he said.
According to him, the main task is the intellectual protection of the border: "It's the monitoring of the situation, the creation of a system to receive information, [the tracking of] the movement of people, vehicles, prevention of reconnaissance and sabotage groups, illegal freight and migrants. That is, an intelligent combination of technical capabilities and human resources," Tsyhykal said.
The European Wall is a project to build a wall on the Ukrainian state border with Russia, which was initiated by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine under Arseniy Yatsenyuk's premiership in 2014. The project is designed until 2020 and provides for building engineering facilities with surveillance systems.
