MEXICO –The President of Mexico, Felipe Calderón, lamented today the attacked against two United States’ officers by Mexican policemen last august 24; he also pledged to conduct a “thorough” investigation of the actions.

In front of US Ambassador Anthony Wayne, Calderón “deeply” regretted the attack and reminded him that the PGR (Attorney General’s Office) is conducting an investigation.

Last Friday two security expert officers from the United States Embassy were shot by the Mexican Federal Police (PF) while travelling inside an armored vehicle with diplomatic license plates through a road in Morelos, in the central area of Mexico.

The van, in which an officer of the Mexican Secretariat of Marine was also travelling, was shot over 40 times by the agents during a confusing incident for which 12 members of the PF are under preventive arrest.

“We cannot allow these actions, be it for negligence, lack of training, lack of trust or complicity,” stated the president today, pledging rigor and severity on a case that has shamed the PF, an office under the Public Security Secretariat (SSP in Spanish).

The president of Mexico offered these four words after the event, addressing the public for the first time during the inauguration of the “Sumemos Causas, Ciudadanos + Policías” forum, organized by the Causa Común NGO.

Calderón thanked Wayne the support his country has given Mexico through the Merida Initiative, the security plan by which the US channels funding and technology to Mexico and Central America.

The leader said that Mexico wants to “keep working hard” with the US in security matters, he also thanked the ambassador for the respect his country has shown to the co-responsibility principle in the fight against organized crime.

Before the meeting, Wayne stated to the press that both countries were joining forces for the investigation to move forward; he also said that the results of this collaboration would soon be released.

“There is a big effort being made by the authorities of both countries to prepare and organize this investigation, and we’ll soon see the outcome of this,” said the diplomat.

A Mexican judge ordered yesterday the preventive detention of the 12 federal policemen involved in the attack against the US embassy car, they were sent to the National Arrest Center while the investigation is conducted.

The court order is based upon an alleged “abuse of authority” and what comes up from the investigation running.

The US Embassy’s first comment was that its agents had “been ambushed by a group of people” that turned out to be Mexican policemen.
