Gheen: Arpaio case about future of our borders

The spokesman for a pro-immigration enforcement group says a lot more is on the line than the political future of Arizona's famous and controversial sheriff.

William Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, or ALIPAC, says Sheriff Joe Arpaio has upset the Feds and become their target.

The outspoken sheriff of Maricopa County is facing a criminal contempt charge for defying a judge's orders to stop immigration enforcement on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Federal prosecutors are pursuing the charge, which could put the sheriff, who is 84, behind bars for six months, The Arizona Republic reported.

The embattled sheriff was sued in 2007 over the claim his immigration patrols are discriminatory. A 2011 order barred the sheriff and his deputies from detaining people on the belief that they are illegals.

"I believe at this point," Gheen observes, "that Sheriff Joe Arpaio's political survival, as well as all of our survivals on the illegal alien issue, is dependent on Donald Trump defeating Hillary Clinton."

That warning from Gheen mirrors Arpaio's own words, who said the prosecution is timed for the Nov. 8 election, the newspaper reported. The sheriff is up for re-election on Election Day and early voting has started in the county.

The newspaper story stated that people were surprised the Feds are pushing for a criminal charge over a civil charge. A former U.S. attorney called the action "unheard of."

The newspaper story also reported illegal immigrants were among the crowd cheering outside the federal courtroom, chanting "Yes, we can!" in Spanish.

If Trump fails to win on Nov. 8, says Gheen, "I think the situation for every single Republican, or conservative, is a lot more dire than many of them really understand."
