    Is Your Food In Storage Dead Or Alive?

    January 23, 2012 by Peggy Layton

    Add sprouts to salads, omelets, shakes, stir-fry, bread, soups, casseroles or whole-grain bread.

    You asked me for ideas on how to make food storage work for you. You asked for articles that were practical in 2012. So let’s take your food storage up to the next level: live food.

    Along with prepackaged and convenience foods, you need some food that can be sprouted. Dead food in storage cannot sustain you.

    The Raw Truth
    You must have some food that is alive.

    Q. How do you know if it is alive?
    A. Test it. If it sprouts, it is alive.

    Q. How do you do that?
    A. Let’s go over the basics.

    Whenever anyone asks me where to begin when purchasing food storage, I always tell them to start with the basics: grains, legumes and seeds. If you have these basic food storage items and they are alive, you will not starve.

    You must eat your stored food regularly so that you are familiar with how it should be prepared. Doing so also helps you rotate food stores. If you don’t eat your stored food on a regular basis, your body will not as able to absorb nutrients from stored foods when you need them in an emergency.

    Most people put food away, hoping that they never have to use it. This is a waste of money.

    The presence of one enzyme makes food alive. You need to store some foods that are a source of live enzymes so that you can better digest your food. In times of stress, your digestive system tends to shut down a little; it needs enzymes to break down the food.

    Grains Are Not Just For Bread
    Q. How do you get sprouts?
    A. From seeds.

    Q. What kind?
    A. Grains, legumes and others.

    Q. Which ones will sprout?
    A. On page 104 in my book Emergency Food Storage & Survival Handbook, there’s a great chart that shows all the grains and seeds that will sprout. If you don’t have one of these books yet, you can get yours on the website www.peggylayton.com.

    Wheat is not the only grain that will sprout. You can also sprout grains such as barley, buckwheat, corn and rye. Grains high in protein are called super grains. These include amaranth, Kamut®, quinoa, spelt, millet, buckwheat, triticale and fenugreek. If you are gluten intolerant, you will want to take advantage of gluten-free grains such as brown rice, quinoa, millet and buckwheat.

    Legumes that can be sprouted include: black beans, adzuki beans, great northern beans, garbanzo beans, navy beans, kidney beans, soybeans, pinto beans, red beans, lentils, mung beans and whole dried peas.

    Seeds that sprout include: alfalfa, broccoli, cabbage, clover, radish, red clover, sunflower and salad blends. These seeds are totally different than the ones you plant in the garden. It is highly recommended that you have seeds for sprouting and seeds for planting a garden. Sprouting seeds can be purchased in health food stores and food storage suppliers.

    Q. What do I do with sprouts?
    A. Add sprouts to salads, omelets, shakes, stir-fry, bread, soups, casseroles or whole-grain bread. Or dry them and blend them into a highly nutritious flour. (Look for upcoming articles on how to do this.)

    Q. Are your seeds viable? Will they sprout?
    A. Test them to make sure.

    How To Sprout
    If you have quart jars or sprouting trays, you can sprout wheat, legumes and seeds.

    I use 20 drops of the product called ION stabilized oxygen in the water that I soak the sprouting seeds, grains, and legumes in. ION kills any bacteria that might be on the seed and it stops the growth of mold and fungus. Sprouts stays fresher longer and do not sour when ION is used in the soaking water. To purchase ION go to www.peggylayton.com

    To grow sprouts successfully follow these steps:
    1. Clean and discard broken beans, dirt clots or rocks.
    2. Place the legumes or seeds in a widemouthed jar with a plastic lid that has holes in it for drainage. You can purchase the lids from a food-storage company or in kitchen stores and health-food stores. If you cannot find plastic sprouting lids, you can use fabric, nylon netting or screen material cut a little larger than the lid and secured with an elastic band or the ring that comes with mason jars. Fill the jar with water and rinse the seeds. Drain them through the lid or cloth.
    3. Fill the jar with water again and let it soak overnight. Use filtered water if you have it; you want to avoid chlorinated water soaking into the sprouts.
    4. The next day, drain the water from the jar of sprouts. It is not good if the water is cloudy or foamy, because that means fermentation has begun.
    5. The sprouts will start to grow. Place the jars in a warm place, about 60-80 degrees F. Rinse them twice daily, draining off excess water each time. It generally takes about three to five days for the sprouts to grow mature enough for use in a salad or stir-fry.
    6. Expose the sprouts to sunlight after they start to mature. Put them on a windowsill for a few hours to develop the chlorophyll that gives sprouts their green color.
    7. Harvest and eat the sprouts. Bean sprouts can be best eaten when the sprout pops its head out of the seed. All other sprouts are best when doubled in size. When the sprouts are ready to eat, rinse them again to wash off the hulls and any seeds that did not sprout. Sprouts can be kept in the refrigerator for a few days in an airtight plastic zippered bag with a wet paper towel under the sprouts. Sprouts go sour after three days. If you cannot eat them all, freeze them for use in stir-fry meals.
    This information came out of the book Emergency Food Storage and Survival Handbook. If you would like to order this book, go to the website www.peggylayton.com.

    After sprouting, the vitamins and minerals increase by 75 percent. I believe that sprouting is almost as vital to food storage as water is. That is why I recommend that these food items be purchased first. Sprouts are best if eaten raw in salads or lightly sautéed. Sprouting grains, legumes and seeds literally turns the food into fresh produce. It is like having an indoor garden when other fresh vegetables are not available.

    I call this living food storage.

    Man cannot live on sprouts alone, so I have the perfect companion meals: prepackaged meals in a Mylar® pouch that serve four people. All you have to do is add water and cook. I’ve been making these fast-and-easy gourmet meals by GoFoods that will store for a minimum of 15 years. The food is dehydrated, not freeze-dried, and the prices are very reasonable. It takes only 15 to 20 minutes to cook, and the cooking instructions are on each package. The food is delicious. The best part of this opportunity is that you can earn money by referring others. This extra money will help you pay for your own food reserves.

    My Recommendations
    This company has a new concept in storable foods that are delicious, nutritious, affordable, clean and convenient for daily use. It reminds me of the pre-packaged food from the grocery store like soup mixes, Hamburger Helper® and Rice-A-Roni® without all the additives, preservatives and chemicals.

    Some of the features of GoFoods are:
    • The food is dehydrated from premium-grade, fresh raw fruits, vegetables, dairy products, grains and legumes.
    • All meals are complete with everything in them. Just add water.
    • These meals can be used every day for fast, convenient and healthy food.
    • There are no genetically modified (GMOs) foods in GoFoods.
    • There is no added monosodium glutamate (MSG).
    • No imports from countries using illegal fertilizers and insecticides.
    • No hydrogenated oils.
    • They are packaged for long-term storage in Mylar® pouches.
    • The packages include soups such as Cheddar Broccoli, Italian Chicken, Vegetable Beef, Tortilla, Corn Chowder, Minestrone, Chicken Noodle, Chili and Potato Cheddar.
    • Entrées include Chicken Pasta Alfredo, Cheesy Chicken Rice Casserole, Beef Stroganoff, Au Gratin Potatoes, Instant Seasoned Potatoes, Santa Fe Fiesta Rice, Creamy Tuscan Pasta With Sun Dried Tomatoes and Thai Coconut Noodles.
    • Breakfast items include Pancake Mix, Granola and Powdered Milk.
    • Breads include Corn Muffin Mix, Cornmeal Dumplings, Wheat Bread Mix and Buttermilk Biscuit Mix.
    • There is a line of beverages as well.
    For this week only, Jan. 23-30, take advantage of a special 20 percent discount off GoFoods meals. This discount is good on the 1-month, 3-month, 6-month and premium food reserve packs. When you go to the website, you must use the promotional code PL201220.

    The company even lets you try before you buy; simply go to www.peggylayton.mygofoods.com and then click on “Go” under “Try a Free Sample” to receive three packages of sample food that will feed two to four people per package. All you do is pay $9.95 for shipping.

    To purchase any of my seven books or my other products: Sprouting trays, dehydrated food, water treatment and preparedness products go to the website http://www.peggylayton.com.

    Health Groups: Statins Linked to 300+ Negative Effects

    Activist Post

    While annual sales of statin drugs have reached 29-billion dollars a year, globally, new concerns are being raised by a broad range of health and consumer advocacy organizations around the world regarding the growing body of clinical research indicating they may be causing far greater harm than good.

    Despite the success of statin drugs for lowering cholesterol, over 300 health problems have been linked to this chemical class of drugs in peer-reviewed clinical research found on the National Library of Medicine.

    GreenMedInfo.com, a biomedical research site, is offering a 63-page PDF for free and unlimited download, as part of a broad-based awareness campaign dedicated to informing consumers and health care practitioners alike of the danger represented by the indiscriminate and excessive use of this chemical class of drugs.

    Natural Society, which has established a global following due to its hard-hitting investigative pieces into the role corporations play in adversely affecting environmental and human health, is spear-heading the dissemination of this message, and openly invites other organizations to join the cause.

    The medical-ethical principle of informed consent requires that patients be told the risks and benefits associated with their treatment. Until there is full awareness among the millions of statin users in this country and abroad that these drugs may be contributing to muscle damage, nerve damage, cancer, diabetes, and hundreds of other adverse health effects, we believe the burden of proving them safe should be on the companies producing these products, as well as the regulatory agencies approving them for use, instead of the population being given them.

    Monsanto’s Infertility-Linked Roundup Found in All Urine Samples Tested

    Mike Barrett
    Activist Post

    A recent study conducted by a German university found very high concentrations of glyphosate, a carcinogenic chemical found in herbicides like Monsanto’s Roundup, in all urine samples tested.

    The amount of glyphosate found in the urine was staggering, with each sample containing concentrations at 5- to 20-fold the limit established for drinking water.

    This is just one more piece of evidence that herbicides are, at the very least, being sprayed out of control.

    Glyphosate in Monsanto’s Roundup Impacting Global Health

    This news comes only one month after it was found that glyphosate, contained in Monsanto’s Roundup, is contaminating the groundwater in the areas in which it is used. What does this mean?

    It means that toxic glyphosate is now polluting the world’s drinking water through the widespread contamination of aquifers, wells and springs. The recent reports of glyphosate showing up in all urine samples only enhances these past findings.

    Monsanto continues to make the claim that their Roundup products are completely safe for both animals and humans. However, many environmentalists, scientists , activists, and even doctors say otherwise.

    Glyphosate radically affects the metabolism of plants in a negative way. It is a systemic poison preventing the formation of essential amino acids, leading to weakened plants which ultimately die from it.

    A formula seems to have been made to not only ruin the agricultural system, but also compromise the health of millions of people worldwide. With the invention of Monsanto’s Roundup Ready crops, resistant superweeds are taking over farmland, and public health is being attacked.

    As it turns out, glyphosate is also leaving behind its residue on Roundup Ready crops, causing further potential concern for public health. Glyphosate is even contributing to escalating rates of mental illness and obesity through the depletion of beneficial gut flora that directly regulates these functions.

    But it certainly doesn’t stop there.

    Researchers tested roundup on mature male rats at a concentration range between 1 and 10,000 parts per million (ppm), and found that within 1 to 48 hours of exposure, testicular cells of the mature rats were either damaged or killed. Even at a concentration of 1 ppm, the Roundup was able to affect the test subjects by decreasing their testosterone concentrations by as much as 35%.

    Statins, yep, husband was on them for a long time following a mild stroke. They said his cholesterol was hugh so they convinced him he had to take it for his own health. What they did not tell him was that it would begin robbing his body of COQ10.

    This oil-soluble, vitamin-like substance is present in most eukaryotic cells, primarily in the mitochondria. It is a component of the electron transport chain and participates in aerobic cellular respiration, generating energy in the form of ATP. Ninety-five percent of the human body’s energy is generated this way.[1][2] Therefore, those organs with the highest energy requirements—such as the heart, liver and kidney —have the highest CoQ10 concentrations.[3][4][5]
    This exert from Wikipedias explanation best says its need in the body. Since we found out the problems with statins, he got off of this, but not till I started noticing beyond normal fatigue. Since then he has begun taking grape seed extract and psyillium powder to help with cholesterol, and COQ10 to help his body replace, and hopefully help with some damage control caused by the statins.

    ALERT: Colorado Proposes Flu Shot Mandate for Healthcare Workers

    The Colorado Board of Health will hold their final hearing on February 15th on whether or not to adopt a new rule that would mandate healthcare workers get an annual flu vaccine. There is NO religious or personal exemption in the current version of the rule, despite the fact that these exemptions are available to schoolchildren. Time is running out and comments must be received by Feb. 1st, 2012. Learn more here.

    Read NVIC’s statement opposing proposed federal recommendations for flu shot mandates for health care workers here.

    NVIC Helps Families in FL, KS, MS, VT Protect Vaccine Choices

    On Thursday Virginia’s House began legislative measures to repeal the state’s HPV mandate. Currently residents of West Virginia can only obtain a medical exemption for vaccination. A new bill introduced would expand exemptions to religious and conscientious reasons. Parents in Kansas and Vermont are also fighting for vaccine exemption rights, along with those in Florida and Mississippi. Below are more state legislative alerts where families have an opportunity to make their voices heard!

    NVIC’s free online Advocacy Portal is tracking it all and keeping people up-to-date on threats to vaccine exemption rights in their state. To learn more, click here.

    NJ & OSHA Reject Flu Shot Mandates for Healthcare Workers

    New Jersey’s Governor Christie pocket vetoed a bill that would mandate flu vaccine for health care workers. The governor used the pocket veto, which is the only way to veto a bill without returning it to the legislature for a possible vote to override the veto. Thanks to Rita Marie who posted this information on NVIC’s FaceBook wall. You can thank Governor Christie for his decisive action and NOT SIGNING this bill at (609) 777-2500 or (609) 292-6000.

    OSHA Says “No” to Flu Shot Mandates Without Exemptions

    The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a statement opposing mandatory flu shots for health care workers that do not contain exemptions for medical, religious and persona/philosophical belief reasons. OSHA stated:
    While we are supportive of the Healthy People 2020 goal of a 90% vaccination rate, we have seen no evidence that demonstrates that such a high rate is in fact necessary. Furthermore, the current influenza vaccine is no magic bullet. The current state of influenza vaccine technology requires annual reformulation and revaccination and the efficacy is quite variable. Every year there are numerous circulating strains of influenza that are not included in the vaccine. In years where the antigenic match is good, the vaccine only provides protection against the 3 strains in the formulation. In years when the antigenic match is poor, the vaccine may provide no protection at all.The limits of current influenza vaccine technology are especially problematic in the context of a mandatory influenza vaccination program that results in job loss. Lastly, reliance on a mandatory influenza vaccination policy may provide healthcare workers, health care facility management and patients with an unwarranted sense of security and result in poor adherence to other infection control practices that prevent all types of infections, not just influenza. Influenza vaccination has always been just one part of a comprehensive multi-layered infection control program.”
    OSHA’s complete position statement was submitted to the National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC) last September and appears in the NVAC's certified minutes as Appendix B on page 25 here.

    NVIC Website Highlight – The Vaccine Ingredient Calculator
    By Theresa Wrangham, NVIC Executive Director

    It is always exciting to share with our readers enhancements to our website. Over the past year we have changed our look to make your access to life-saving information easier. During 2012 there will be many enhancements that I will be sharing with you and I invite your feedback!

    This month I want to share with you all the enhancements made to the Vaccine Ingredient Calculator (VIC) made by NVIC’s Volunteer Director of Database Management, Chris Downey, MS. Chris devotes many hours to improving the VIC’s features and keeping all the information on vaccine ingredients up-to-date.

    As many of our veteran readers know, the VIC is meant to be used as an educational planning tool providing parents with easy access to information like ingredients contained in vaccines, federal safety guidelines that apply to ingredients and more to assist in the decision-making process.

    When my children were young, I made many assumptions about the vaccines that were administered to them. For example, I didn’t know that for many vaccine ingredients there are no established safety limits. The VIC covers 16 ingredients contained in the vaccines recommended by the CDC's childhood immunization schedule.

    The VIC computes exposures to aluminum, bovine protein, egg protein, formaldehyde, mercury (Thimerosal), mouse protein, phenol red, phenoxyethanol, polysorbate 80 and yeast protein contained in the vaccines recommended by the CDC for children. Parents can select the vaccines scheduled to be administered ahead of their scheduled appointments and learn which vaccine ingredients have safety limits, what those limits are and if a vaccine(s) given at any one time will exceed those safety limits. The VIC will also print your vaccination plan and provides a post vaccination record for parents to retain.

    Enhancements that Chris has programmed into the VIC over the past year include:
    • Facebook integration;
    • Improved dropdown displays for vaccine ingredients;
    • Human Protein and DNA computation;
    • Beta feature – Chart Explain, which provides details on vaccine ingredients;
    • New Quick View for DTaP and Influenza vaccines, which provide an overview chart of all ingredients in these vaccines;
    • Follow @VaxCalc on Twitter to stay up-to-date on what we’re learning as we continue to improve the VIC;
    • Added VIC Testimonials;
    • New articles added to the Learning and Resource Centers;
    We hope that these enhancements are helpful and that our readers will pass this information on to new parents considering vaccination.

    Chris is working on further expanding the VIC in 2012 and looking for more ideas on what new features you would like to see. He could also use some assistance from experienced software and database developers, as well as beta testers. We are specifically looking for somebody with HTML5/JS/CSS3 skills. If you have a suggestion, or would be willing to help develop future improvement of the VIC, please email VaccineCalc@gmail.com.

    Next month I will tell you more about MedAlerts, which is another unique vaccine education feature of NVIC’s website.

    In The News
    Study Finds Link Between Aluminum Adjuvant Toxicity & Autoimmunity“Immune challenges during early development, including those vaccine-induced, can lead to permanent detrimental alterations of the brain and immune function. Experimental evidence also shows that simultaneous administration of as little as two to three immune adjuvants can overcome genetic resistance to autoimmunity. In some developed countries, by the time children are 4 to 6 years old, they will have received a total of 126 antigenic compounds along with high amounts of aluminum (Al) adjuvants through routine vaccinations. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, safety assessments for vaccines have often not included appropriate toxicity studies because vaccines have not been viewed as inherently toxic.” Tomljenovic L, Shaw CA. Mechanisms of aluminum adjuvant toxicity and autoimmunity in pediatric populations. Lupus. (February 2012).

    Influenza Vaccine Investigator Guilty of Research Fraud - The British Medical Journal (BMJ) has published findings from the General Medical Council (GMC) that found Dr. Iain Stephenson guilty of forging colleagues’ signature, asking a nurse to falsify a declaration, destroying log sheets and recruiting himself into a study under a false name. As a result, the GMC has suspended Dr. Stephenson for four months. Read the BMJ article here, courtesy of the One-Click Group.

    Congress Withdraws SOPA, PIPA Anti-Piracy Measures - PIPA and SOPA were stopped in Congress thanks to HUGE protests from Google, Wikipedia and other internet based companies that mobilized consumer grassroots communication with Congress. SOPA and PIPA would have censored the First Amendment right to Freedom of Speech, which is greatly valued by our readers. Read more here.

    AMA Paper Proposes Law Forcing People into Experimental Vaccine Trials

    Mike Barrett
    NaturalSociety
    January 27, 2012

    How would you react if I were to tell you that you or your child were forced to participate in experimental vaccine trials? A paper published by the American Medical Association’s Virtual Mentor wants to do just that. It seems that the amount of current participants in current experimental vaccine trials is a bit too low, so why not create a federal law forcing each person to need to “opt-out” of experimental vaccine trials in an attempt to better society?

    AMA Proposes Law ‘Forcing’ Individuals to Participate in Experimental Vaccine Trials

    The proposed law is lunacy to say that least, stating that individuals must make a “mandated choice” to participate in such experimental trials. People shouldn’t be automatically enrolled in experimental trials or need to state in advance their decision to “opt-out”. Along with the law will come a customer list for big pharma, where each participant’s information will be shared with the pharmaceutical companies in order to gather trial and field test data. Of course this isn’t so different from how things operate now, where individuals are enrolled into big pharma’s database even if you exempt your child from vaccination. But if big pharma can’t produce enough positive data from those who actually want to volunteer for introducing a new product to the FDA for approval, they may just try to force people to participate or use a segment of the population that is ignorant to the laws surrounding the trials.

    What happens if these experimental vaccines cause harm? There are laws already set in place that essentially give vaccine manufacturers immunity to legal repercussions. That is to say that if your child is harmed from a vaccine, the vaccine manufacturers are not financially or morally responsible. The National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986 protects vaccine manufacturers from any liability.

    Another example of similar medical and political tyranny is when a document was signed by Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, where both vaccine makers and federal officials were granted complete legal immunity from any repercussions — regardless of whether or not the case is valid. Signed in July of 2009 by Sebelius, the document drew upon the provisions of a law signed in 2006 created for public emergencies. Granting swine flu vaccine makers legal protection and establishing a compensation fund, the legislation allows for vaccine makers to virtually disregard consumer safety.

    It is interesting to note that these laws are still needed even though health officials and vaccine makers tout vaccines as being 99.99% effective. But it isn’t so surprising, given the countless occasions in which vaccines have ruined both the lives of children and parents.

    Furthermore, previous attempts to test the anthrax vaccine on unsuspecting participants went sour after the public was alerted to the shocking history behind the anthrax vaccine. In a 2007 report by the CDC in conjunction with theVaccine Healthcare Centers of the Department of Defense and the watchdog group Government Accountability found that ”between 1 and 2 percent” of vaccinated military personnel experienced ”severe adverse events, which could result in disability or death.”As a result of public outrage, the government called off the testing.

    What would even happen if there were complications in future trials? Going by past history with other experimental vaccines, severe complications would probably just be hidden. The controversial trials of experimental AIDS vaccines that led to the loss of innocent lives have already been ignored by mainstream scientists and reporters. Even the scientists responsible for the deaths covered up the situation, failing to report the fatalities of their trials in order to prevent the public from finding out.

    Giving big pharma a guaranteed customer list of individuals while simultaneously giving them immunity from lawsuits is quite the deal. Through activism and spreading the word, hopefully such a deal will not be made.

    The 10 Rules For Your Emergency Food Pantry

    Those of you who plan to take the first steps toward preparing for emergencies may feel a bit overwhelmed at where to begin. After all, there is a lot of food to choose from at the grocery stores. Many websites, including this one encourage families to start buying small amounts of food related preparedness items each time they go shopping. This way, your budget is not dramatically affected.
    Food storage calculators are a great tool to incorporate in your preparedness planning, and can help you understand how much food your family will need for a given emergency. The food storage calculations can also be printed out and used as an inventory list to keep you on track in terms of what preparedness supplies you have and will need.
    To make the most of your emergency food supply, keep these essential food pantry rules in mind before purchasing:
    1. Caloric intake is an important factor in survival. In any disaster situation, you want to avoid malnutrition. Having foods stored to prevent this health issue will keep you at your optimum health. Stock up on foods that provide you with essential nutrients to maintain body functions, proteins and carbohydrates, fats for energy, as well as foods that are not high in salt (the more salty your food is, the more water you will drink). To calculate how many calories you will need in your diet, click here.
    2. Consider buying multifunctional food items. Items that can serve more than one purpose will help your finances, as well as save precious space in the food storage pantry. Items such as oats, pasta, rice, wheat and beans are some great low-cost foods will serve a variety of uses.
    3. Store high energy snacks to help boost energy levels. Eating snacks that are high in complex carbohydrates and protein will provide you with a guaranteed energy boost. High energy snacks such as nuts, peanut butter, crackers, granola bars and trail mix can be stored for up to 1 year and will help keep energy levels and spirits high in an emergency scenario.
    4. Bring on the protein! Protein is an essential ingredient in our daily diets and cannot be omitted out of a survival diet. Canned meat is a good source of protein and can also help you maintain your energy level. Meats such as tuna, ham, chicken and spam are great additions to the food pantry and are multifunctional. (Remember, the oil in canned meat can be used as an emergency candle.) Beans are another great source of protein, and when beans are accompanied with rice, it makes a complete protein which provides all the amino acids needed to survive. One serving of beans and rice provides 19.9 g, or 40 percent of your daily vitamins.
    5. Don’t forget the basics. Essential staples such as cooking oil, flour, cornmeal, salt, sugar, spices, baking soda, baking powder and vinegar should not be overlooked. If they are present in your kitchen, they should likewise be present in the emergency food supply.
    6. Convenience helps in stressful situations. Many moms know that boxed dinners can be a lifesaver when you are in a time crunch. Having some pre-packaged dinners and meals-to-grab during emergency scenarios will help you begin acclimating yourself to cooking in a grid down scenario as well as can help provide some comfort at the same time. Personally speaking, my family has the “just add water” pancake mixes, corn breads and drink mixes that are a great convenience.
    7. Variety’s the very spice of life, that gives it all it’s pleasure. Variety in your food pantry is important and can prevent the monotony that comes with eating the same foods day in and day out. Having a well rounded food storage will cut down on culinary boredom, as well as balance your diet. Further, stocking up on a variety of spices will also enhance your food pantry.
    8. Find comfort in the little things. Have some comfort food items that provide enjoyment to the family. Items such as popcorn, sweet cereals, hard candy, juice boxes, pickles, applesauce, pudding, cookies could be a great way to provide a bit of normalcy to the emergency situation you may face.
    9. Have backs up for your backs ups. Compressed food bars are lightweight, taste good and are nutritious. Having food bars as a back up to your existing food supply can provide you with peace of mind knowing you have an alternative to turn to if you run out of food. Further, these are great additions to your 72-hour bag or bug out vehicle. A review of the different types of bars can be read here or you can practice your survival skills and make your own with this recipe. MRE’s are another alternative food choice to turn to if you happen to run out of food in your pantry. Although many have turned their nose up at MRE’s (due to their high amounts of preservatives), they will provide you with sufficient calories and nutrition when it counts. Note: These should not be the only items in your food supply. Over time, you could become nutrient and vitamin deficient.
    10. Rotate and resupply when needed. Any items bought for the food storage closet should be used, rotated and resupplied. This is the best way to have the freshest foods available in the event that a disaster occurs. When organizing food reserves place the item that has the earliest expiration date in the front so that it is used first. FIFO is a well known acronym used in the restaurant business that stands for, “First In, First Out,” and can be incorporated in your food storage endeavors. Do an inventory check every 6 months to make sure that canned goods, preserves and other storage items are within their expiration dates.
    Keeping the above considerations in mind when purchasing your food supply will provide your family with a well rounded food pantry stocked with an array of foods that will assist in promoting a healthy diet. Not listed in the suggestions is water. You must have water to survive. To learn more about potable water, click here. It would be prudent to have a 2-week supply of water on hand, as well as a water filtration device to rely on for extended disasters.
    Prepping is a passion for some. For others it is the most efficient way to keep their family as safe as possible. For further resources and a list of essential items for your emergency supply, click here.
