RNC Threatens To Bar Nevada To Stop Delegates Voting For Ron Paul

Army of Paul supporters are seizing control of GOP in under the radar coup

In a stunning move, the Republican National Committee has warned that it may refuse to allow the entire delegation for Nevada to be seated at the national convention for fear that Ron Paul supporters have taken control of the state.

Officials are petrified that Paul’s army of supporters are in position to take up more delegate slots than Mitt Romney supporters. While Romney is thought to have won 20 of the 28 slots available in Nevada, officials fear that the delegates that take them will ignore party rules by voting for Paul over Romney during the first round of balloting.
“I believe it is highly likely that any committee with jurisdiction over the matter would find improper any change to the election, selection, allocation, or binding of delegates, thus jeopardizing the seating of Nevada’s entire delegation to the National Convention,” said John R. Phillippe Jr., the chief counsel for the RNC, in a letter obtained by the Las Vegas Sun.
“If a prospective delegate’s name is certified to the RNC but has not been approved by an authorized representative of the candidate he or she professes to support, grounds for a contest may exist,” Phillippe wrote.
“In any case, to the extent a prospective delegate is purportedly elected in excess of the number of slots allocated to his or her preferred candidate, such delegate will be bound to vote at the national convention for the candidate to whom that delegate was allocated.”
Nevada news source rgj.com reports that despite the threats from the RNC, Carl Bunce, chairman of Paul’s campaign in Nevada, has pledged to continue the strategy of electing as many Paul supporters as possible to Nevada’s national delegation this Saturday at the state convention.
Bunce said that the strategy is within the rules, referring to the RNC letter as “a creative writing assignment given to them by the Romney campaign to threaten the Paul supporters and Ron Paul campaign.”
“It’s ridiculous. It is nothing more than a veiled threat.” Bunce added.
“You can’t come in in the seventh inning and say, ‘Oh, we are going to change the rules here. The (Romney) campaign adviser has to come in and give you a loyalty test on who you support before you can go to bat,” Bunce said. “This is tyranny, if you can come in and change the rules whenever you want. That’s not a republic. That’s tyranny.”
As we reported yesterday, Republican officials all over the country are terrified that Ron Paul’s mass appeal among grassroots groups and the exceptionally strong dedication and organisation of Paul supporters could see them hijack the national convention for their candidate.
Many Republican insiders believe that Paul’s supporters are literally seizing control of the party by stealth at the State level.
If Paul can score a plurality of delegates from five states, his supporters could nominate him from the convention floor. If delegates thought to be Romney supporters then actually turn out to be Paul supporters, the convention could be thrown into chaos as far as GOP officials see it.
This weekend, Paul supporters in Maine are aiming to get their own convention chairman elected and take a majority of delegate slots in another “takeover” attempt.
Last weekend, Paul delegates dominated Louisiana GOP caucuses. Paul supporters won about four and a half of the six Congressional District caucus conventions. A campaign news release noted that Paul is now in position to dominate the state convention in June.
In Massachusetts, Paul national campaign chairman Jesse Benton told the Daily Caller that Paul supporters occupy 16 of 19 delegate slots filled in congressional district selection processes.
“They are bound to Romney but support Ron,” Benton told the Daily Caller. “The effect of this coup isn’t immediately clear.”
Paul supporters have also registered a number of successes in the past week at state committees and conventions in Minnesota, Alaska, Iowa, Colorado, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.
Speaking on Bloomberg News earlier in the week, the congressman himself admitted that his campaign was “doing very, very well” by using the establishment’s own rules against it.
“Just look at this last week. The news is very favorable to us. We could even end up winning Iowa, ironically enough. In Minnesota, we’re doing well, and Maine, Nevada and Missouri. We’re doing very, very well. Some of the states we could very well win or come up very much because the delegate process is completely different than these straw votes,” Paul said.

Just In: The Reason They Did Not Unbind The Nv Delegation.

Submitted by joeinmo on Sun, 05/06/2012 - 13:39

It turns out that since they(Paul supporters) control the delegation, and RNC rules allow for Delegates to Abstain, they did not want to jeopardize the NV delegation to get kicked out of the convention.

Abstaining on the first vote , gets the same result of denying Romney delegate votes.

I guess the wording they have approved allows delegates to abstain for any reason, this was the choice of the Ron Paul Nevada Campaign.

Ron Paul wins 21 of Maine's 24 GOP delegates

But Mitt Romney, who got shut out by the voters at the state convention, has dispatched his top lawyer to challenge the results.

AUGUSTA — The second day of the Maine Republican State Convention is coming to an end, but the controversy continues.

of the 15 at-large delegates who were elected and frequent convention updates throughout the day, check out our Capitol Ticker political blog.

Organizers at the Augusta Civic Center on Sunday said presidential candidate Ron Paul has won 21 of Maine's 24 delegates that will go to the national GOP convention in Tampa, Fla., and fellow candidate Mitt Romney has won zero.

The results were based on voting Saturday night and Sunday.

But Paul's victory is likely to be challenged by the Romney campaign, which has dispatched its top lawyer, Benjamin Ginsberg, to Maine. Ginsberg was President George W. Bush's lawyer during the 2000 Florida recount.

Maine Republican Party Chairman Charlie Webster said this morning that the Romney campaign will contest the results and attempt to have them thrown out. The Romney campaign will argue that the vote didn’t take place in an open forum, Webster said.

After Paul supporters were elected into power Saturday the convention was tossed into chaos.

County delegates eventually voted for the 15 at-large national delegates in closed-door meetings. Webster said the vote was supposed to take place on the floor.

The Maine results will ultimately be reviewed by the Republican National Committee.

In total, Maine will send 24 delegates to the national convention. Only Webster and Gov. Paul LePage remained uncommitted.

Last week the RNC warned the Nevada Republican Party not to seat too many Paul delegates at the national convention or risk not having their entire state delegation counted by the national party.

According to a report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the letter was sent last week to Nevada Republican Party Chairman Michael McDonald, who had asked for a legal opinion about delegate selection ahead of the state GOP convention.

The RNC lawyer said it would be "highly likely" Nevada's 28 delegate seats at the Tampa, Fla., convention would be jeopardized if Paul delegates took up slots that should be allocated to Romney.

Romney won the Feb. 4 Nevada caucuses with half the vote. He is the presumptive GOP nominee.

The Paul campaign has ignored that warning.

Romney also won the Maine presidential preference poll despite a strong showing by Paul, but the poll was nonbinding.

Matt MacDonald, a Paul supporter who has been speaking on behalf of the campaign, said the Paul camp was unconcerned about the challenge, which could become a battle between attorneys representing the campaigns.

"We have four lawyers ready to go," MacDonald said.

Meanwhile, the Romney challenge continued on the convention floor as supporters attempted procedural maneuvers.

But each attempt was blocked by the convention chairman Brent Tweed, a Paul supporter, and his stand-in, state Sen. Roger Katz, R-Katz.

Katz is not a Paul supporter.

Paul's supporters celebrated Sunday's winning of the majority of delegates.

"It's certainly a significant victory," said Jim Azzola of South Portland, Cumberland County coordinator for Paul.

Paul's supporters say Maine would become the sixth state to elect a majority of Paul supporters to the national convention, assuring the libertarian-leaning congressman a prime-time podium at the Tampa gathering, according to the Associated Press.

Charles Cragin, a Romney supporter who lost Saturday's bid to chair the convention to a Paul supporter, called the turn of events at the Maine convention "bizarre." Cragin said the Paul-led delegation may not be recognized at the national convention because of violations of alleged rules of procedure this weekend in Augusta.

"They have so phenomenally screwed this up that they will go to Tampa and not be seated," Cragin said.

Paul supporters actually accused the Romney crowd of ballot-tampering on Saturday. They said Romney supporters photocopied copies of the Paul slate and substituted the names of Romney backers to trick delegates.

"We came here to see democracy in action. We are floored by what happened, absolutely floored to see the cheating," said Elizabeth Shardlow of Auburn, a Paul activist.

Cragin said Paul supporters bent and suspended the rules of procedure in their favor after they won power.

"When you have no rules, you have anarchy," Cragin said.

    Ron Paul 2012

On Sunday, thousands in Texas gathered for a Tea Party Express rally. This rally featured Ron Paul, his son and Senator Rand Paul, Tea Party Express chair Amy Kremer, and Texas Republican candidate for U. S. Senate, Ted Cruz. Many expressed relief to see a Tea Party organization not rushing to support Mitt Romney.

Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton said “One day this rally will occupy a special place in our history books when the Paul family and tea party are credited with restoring American government to its constitutional limits. How soon this recognition comes is up to voters”.

Breaking! The Patriots of Nevada Deliver. Ron Paul delegates Win 25 of 28 Seats to Republican National Convention!

    Ron Paul 2012

In a contentious and hard fought 20 hour marathon spanning 2 days the patriots of Nevada prevailed and put Ron Paul supporters in 25 of the 28 seats allocated to Nevada for the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

Included in those seats are the new national committee man and committee woman, both liberty lovers and supporters of Ron Paul.

This is an awesome against the odds victory as Romney captured a sizable majority of popular in votes in the state caucus in February.

I can tell you from personal experience as a delegate to this state convention that liberty is alive and well in Nevada, and represented by an amazing group of dedicated and committed patriots.

I will write a more detailed article regarding the highs and lows when I return to Las Vegas, but couldn't wait to get the word out to all of you.

LIBERTY LIVES IN NEVADA. RON PAUL 2012.

Much love to all my countrymen and fellow lovers of liberty.

    Peace out from Sparks.

Ron Paul Wins Iowa! (Yes Iowa!)

    Ron Paul 2012

Breaking News!! Ron Paul Wins Iowa! (Yes Iowa!)

The Iowa caucuses were held four months ago, but today we can declare that the winner appears to be … Ron Paul.

You may have seen those morning-after stories about Mitt Romney’s narrow win (after the missing precincts were discovered in the middle of the night).

You may have read about Rick Santorum’s narrow win after all the votes were recounted.

But when it comes to delegates at the Republican National Convention in August, it looks like Ron Paul, the persistent Texas congressman, might have the state’s largest delegate haul.

According to the Des Moines Register, “the majority of Iowans on the list to go to Tampa for the GOP national convention could be aligned with Ron Paul, a presidential candidate who represents a movement focused on limited government and constitutional principles

The Register reported that of 13 delegates and 13 alternate delegates picked yesterday for the convention, “just one has publicly endorsed Mitt Romney for president — Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad. And just three others publicly supported Rick Santorum, who won the Iowa caucuses but is no longer in the race.”

Iowa’s 28 convention delegates are technically “unbound,” meaning that they can vote for any candidate they choose. But this weekend’s selection process was dominated by Paul loyalists, so it’s highly likely that the Texan will control the first-in-the-nation caucus state’s contingent in Tampa.

Bottom line, according to the Register: “The Iowa caucuses essentially had three winners: Romney on caucus night, Santorum after the certified vote, and Paul in the delegate count.”

And isn’t the delegate count what it’s all about?

That’s good news and bad news for Paul, of course. The Lake Jackson libertarian has defeated Romney in several caucus states by deploying a deep and skilled political organization. But Romney hasn’t lost to Paul in a single primary and appears to have a comfortable majority of convention delegates.

Still, it’s a day for the Ron Paul Revolutionaries to savor. And celebrate.
