DEVELOPING -- Ten people are confirmed dead and seven injured in a shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore, Sheriff John Hanlin announced Thursday night.

It was not immediately clear if the gunman, a 20-year-old man shot and killed by police, was included in the death toll.

The name of the gunman has not been released. Fox News has been told authorities will first check to see if there is any social media or other footprint, including watch lists or travel records, for the individual.

Here's what we know as of 8:00 p.m. ET:

• The shooter was a 20-year-old male and he is now dead.
• Mercy Medical Center said in aFacebook posting that it had received nine patients from the shooting and three more were on the way.
• A Peace Health Sacred Heart Medical Center spokesperson said the hospital had received "six victims," two females and four males. "One of the females is 18 years old."
• Students and faculty members were bused to the Douglas County Fairgrounds

President Obama gave a brief address from the White House Thursday night, calling for a change in gun laws and warning, "we've become numb to this..it cannot be this easy for someone who wants to inflict harm on other people to get (their) hands on a gun."

Chris Harper Mercer, 26, has been identified as the shooter responsible for taking the lives of at least 10 people at a community college in southwest Oregon earlier Thursday, law enforcement sources confirmed to CBS News. Law enforcement officers shot and killed Mercer in an exchange of gunfire later Thursday afternoon.

Law enforcement authorities responded to calls that there was an active shooter on campus at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, at roughly 10:38 a.m. PDT. Ten people were killed and 20 more were injured. The shooter reportedly open fire in one building on campus before moving to the school's science building. Victims were found in at least two buildings.

Mercer allegedly asked people to stand up and state their religion, and then started firing, the News-Review, a local newspaper for Douglas County, Oregon, reported.

Umpqua Community College officials tweeted Thursday evening that the college would be closed until Monday.

Investigators are reportedly examining social media posts Mercer made Wednesday night, according to CNN. He appeared to have had a conversation with others online about his intentions, a source said.

Located in southwestern Oregon about 70 miles south of Eugene, Oregon, and 180 miles south of Portland, Roseburg is a city of roughly 22,000 people. Umpqua Community College is located in the North Umpqua River Valley. The average age of the 13,600 students that attended the college in the 2013-2014 school year was 38.

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown quickly tweeted her condolences: “My thoughts are with the families and victims of today’s tragedy."

"This is so out of character for this whole area," said Rick Francona, a CNN military analyst who lives nearby, CNN reported.

A law enforcement official told CNN that four guns believed to have belonged to the suspect were recovered at the scene.

Brown, a Democrat, declared that, "We have an obligation to protect Oregonians from gun violence. If we want to keep our kids, schools and communities safe, we must make it harder for dangerous people to get guns," CNN reported.

The Obama administration also responded to the shooting by calling for stricter gun control legislation.

No, this stuff is going to happen. The question is why did community college students in Oregon line up and wait to be shot? Why didn't they attack him? Maybe they tried. I guess we'll find out more as the story unfolds. A terrible tragedy that shows no one has taught our children and young people how to defend themselves. We need to make this a priority because that is the only solution.

One might suggest security guards, well, they had security guards, so clearly that's not the solution either.

Joe Olson–the former president of Umpqua Community College–says the school only keeps one guard on shift at a time and that guard is unarmed.

Olson left his position in June. He says one of the biggest debates at the school in 2014 was whether or not to hire armed officers.

On November 5, 2014 a campus communique said the Umpqua Community College community was “split 50-50″ on what to do. According to the Associated Press, Olson presumes the October 1 attack will reignite the discussion not only for Umpqua Community College but for community colleges around the country.

Breitbart News previously reported that the Umpqua campus is a gun free zone. Former U.S. Marshal Art Roderick suggested the gunman chose the campus for that very reason.

He said, “[The gunman] probably knew that the facility was a gun free facility, [which is] an easy target for these kinds of coward individuals. They know they’re not going to get any response unless they happen to run into security or a campus police officer.”

Roderick’s words are bolstered by the former school president’s admission that “the school has only one security officer on duty at a time, and that person isn’t armed.”

Gun free zones offer zero resistance to armed persons who are criminally motivated.

Once again, IF this had not been a 'gun free zone' perhaps this monster would have been stopped in his tracks before killing and wounding so many.
