Ben Carson to Endorse Donald Trump

MIAMI — Ben Carson, the retired pediatric neurosurgeon who ended his presidential bid last week, plans to endorse Donald J. Trump Friday morning, three people familiar with the discussions said.

Mr. Carson will make his endorsement, first reported by the Washington Post, at a morning press conference with Mr. Trump at Mar-A-Lago, his private club in Palm Beach, Fla.

In an interview with John Gibson on Fox News Radio, Mr. Carson said that there was more to Mr. Trump than meets the eye.

“There’s the Donald Trump that you see on television and who gets out in front of big audiences, and there’s the Donald Trump behind the scenes,” Mr. Carson said. “They’re not the same person.”

“One’s very much an entertainer, and one is actually a thinking individual,” he said.

Mr. Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, said that Mr. Trump would be “a lot better than Hillary” and that he would not be as bad as many conservatives fear. He said that Mr. Trump was “more reasonable” than people realized and that he could be an asset to Republican efforts to maintain control of Congress because he is harnessing the anger of the American public.

Mr. Trump has compared Mr. Carson to a child molester, called him “super low energy” and questioned his religion when they were competing against each other for the Republican presidential nomination.

Very good news!

Also unexpected like Chris Christie. And should we be concerned that two well known illegal alien amnesty supporters are now endorsing Trump?

I suspect that Trump is more of a "team leader" CEO than a "director" type. If pressed hard by the pro immigration business lobby he may start to compromise. But that means we have to make the team bigger. In the long run, because he realizes that the US has a long term business battle with the rest of the world as competition I think he will favor trade agreements that keep the US at an advantage. Those in the know, understand that the awakening of the developing world as a collection of economic powerhouses has just started. In other words we will have challenges affecting the financial well being of US citizens coming at us from many angles, and probably relentlessly, too. Trump is sort of thinking out loud at these rallies, but that is better than not thinking at all or trying to fall back to ideals that just are not going to work in the 21st Century.

Trump endorsement divides Carson supporters

Ben Carson's decision to endorse GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump divided his supporters, with many expressing shock and anger over the move on social media.

"Can't believe you chose to support the one candidate who mocks God and is definitely not a Christian. Very disappointed in you and have lost much respect," one supporter wrote on Carson's Facebook page on Friday."I voted for you even though I knew you wouldn't win my area's primary," another wrote. The supporter added that it was "confusing why you would support a person who mocks God by saying he doesn't have to ask for forgiveness and disparages minorities including the disabled and women."

"Honestly I feel used," another person wrote. "I feel like you sold out. You speak of Party as if it has relevance in the kingdom. I am hurt and feel like you have used the flag of Christ to sell out for political gain. I will never support Donald Trump."

Carson has been a star in conservative circles since his 2013 speech at the National Prayer Breakfast criticizing President Obama.

Many supporters, even those who expressed initial shock at the endorsement, though, voiced their continued support for the soft-spoken retired neurosurgeon who ended his White House bid last week.

Carson sought to explain his endorsement of Trump in a note posted to his Facebook account where he argued that the businessman represented a deviation from the nation's current direction of "uncertainty" and "ruination."

The post received a mixed response, with more than 60,000 Facebook likes. Another 7,000 were angered by the post, 5,000 loved it and 2,700 were saddened, according to Facebook's new reactions.

"We can have disagreements, but it is critical that we not allow those disagreements to divide us as a party or as a country," Carson wrote of his decision to back Trump. The pair appeared together during a press conference in Florida on Friday morning where Carson suggested there are "two different Donald Trumps," the public persona and the private one.

The two hammered away at each other earlier in the race, with Trump once saying Carson had "pathological" issues, comparing them to those of a child molester.

In recent weeks, though, the two have shied away from targeting each other, with Trump focusing his attacks on other GOP rivals.
