Trump now says he plans to legalize some undocumented immigrants

Trump now says he plans to legalize some undocumented immigrants

    August 20, 2016
    By: Eduardo Suarez

Sources tell Univision that Trump plans to announce a major shift on immigration policy next week. The Republican candidate met Saturday with Hispanic leaders who said he told them he regrets prior comments about Mexicans.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump plans to present an immigration plan in Colorado Thursday that will include finding a way to legalize millions of undocumented immigrants, according to three people who attended a meeting between the candidate and Hispanic leaders on Saturday at Trump Tower in New York.

"I really liked that Trump acknowledged that there is a big problem with the 11 million [undocumented] people who are here, and that deporting them is neither possible nor humane,” said Jacob Monty, a Texas immigration lawyer who attended the meeting.

If true, Trump's plan would stand in sharp contrast to his previous statements about immigrants during the campaign. During the primaries, the New York property tycoon promised to build a wall along the border with Mexico and to deport all undocumented immigrants.

The possible reversal over immigration policy by the Republican candidate would not be without precedent after Trump has shifted his position on a variety of issues during his campaign from banning Muslims to taxes, minimum wages and and abortion.

Polls show Trump has alienated many minority voters and Republican party strategists have urged him to tone down his rhetoric about immigrants, especially Hispanics who make up a growing share of registered voters - about 10% in November.

Republican National Committee spokesperson Helen Aguirre was also present at the meeting and confirmed that the candidate is working on unveiling a plan. "Trump was very categorical in saying that he's seeking a fair immigration reform," Aguirre said. "He wants to listen to everyone and announce his conclusions in the coming days."

Trump told the group of conservative Hispanic leaders he would announce a plan to grant legal status "that wouldn't be citizenship but would allow them to be here without fear of deportation." said Monty.

The campaign has so far not provided details of the plan, and Trump spokesman Steven Cheung, said in a statement that Trump's posiiton remains unchanged on immigration.

"Mr Trump said nothing today that he hasn't said many times before ... enforce our immigration laws, uphold the Constitution and be fair and humane while putting American workers first,” Cheung said.

When he launched his presidential campaign in June last year, Trump linked immigration and crime. "When Mexico sends its people they’re not sending their best. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists, and some, I assume, are good people," he said at the time.

According to one of the meeting's attendees, Trump said Saturday that he regretted having made those comments, though it was not clear if he had issued an apology.

In a statement on Saturday responding to Trump's meeting with Hispanics, Hillary Clinton’s campaign political director, Amanda Rentería, recalled the billionaire's prior disparaging comments. "If true, this is a cynical attempt from Donald Trump to distract from his dangerous policies that he doubled down on just this week in a new ad. Donald Trump will be Donald Trump and what's clear is that he's dangerous for the Latino community," she said.

The meeting lasted an hour and a half and among those also present were his two top campaign staff, Steve Bannon and Kellyanne Conway, who joined Trump this week following a shake-up of his team.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) chairman Reince Priebus described three meeting as part of "our expansive effort to engage the Hispanic community."

Present were members of a National Hispanic Advisory Council For Trump, a group that includes state representatives, evangelical pastors and executives such as Javier Polit, chief information officer at the Coca-Cola Company.

According to sources who were present at the meeting, Trump spoke in a conciliatory tone. He began by welcoming everyone, then asked attendees what they thought he should do for the Hispanic community. He took notes during the whole meeting.

The Republican candidate said that his main priority was how to handle the 11 million undocumented immigrants who are now in the country, the sources said.

“Trump is aware that he cannot deport 11 million people,” says Lola Zinke, wife of Ryan Zinke, a Republican congressman from Montana, who is a former Navy Seal.

Zinke, the daughter of a Peruvian, is a San Diego lawyer familiar with illegal immigration issues, who says she believes deportation is not the solution. “It doesn’t make sense to force undocumented [immigrants] to go back to their countries to regularize their situation. Trump himself mentioned a possible solution: let them do it at the embassies or consulates of their countries,” she said.

Other people present at the meeting backed that idea, explaining that the candidate said he did not like the idea of forcing undocumented immigrants to go back to their countries to regularize their immigration status, and that it would make sense to allow them to do so without leaving the United States.

“No one wants criminals or rapists here,” Zinke said. “But it’s impossible to deport 11 million people. Trump realizes the contributions the Hispanic community has made to our military. He understands Hispanic values and the contributions of our community,” she added.

Official details of the Trump plan remain unknown. But those who were present at the meeting said it would include some form of legalizing the status of some undocumented immigrants.

“Being eligible will require that people haven’t committed serious crimes or aren’t recently arrived,” Monty said.

The plan would need the support of Congress, but Monty said he had faith in Trump as “someone who has made deals.”

He added: “Trump is capable of sitting down with his party to negotiate and his opponent isn’t. Congress is controlled by Republicans. How will Hillary Clinton move forward with reform?”

Upon exiting the meeting, evangelical pastor Mario Bramnick said he had spoken with Trump about immigration on three occasions and that he always believed that Trump wanted to come up with a detailed plan to address undocumented immigrants in a humane way.

“He’s always understood the problems of the 11 million people that are here and are good people,” Bramnick said. “The first thing is to establish the safety of this country and make it clear that criminals cannot stay. But there are good people and we have to propose reform to discuss what to do with these people,” he said.

Several Hispanic leaders told Trump that Hispanics weren't happy about his more aggressive comments. "He told us that what he'd said was one thing and what he'd meant to say was another," said Jovita Carranza, a Hispanic businesswoman and deputy administrator for the U.S. Small Business Administration under President George W. Bush.

"What he meant to say is that there's a lot of crime involved in these difficult situations that Hispanics go through on the border,” said Carranza, who attended Saturday’s meeting in New York.

“They pay money to cross [the border] and along the way women are raped and they let others die in trucks. Trump said he was referring to that type of crime and to people who are criminals who shouldn't be part of our society," she added.

Carranza said Trump knows the Hispanic community because many of his employees are of Mexican origin, and that he values their contribution to the economy and how much they care about education.

This better not be true. But what this shows is that of all the many problems our country has, "Hispanic leaders" only wanted to talk about letting illegal aliens stay in the US, which proves they are not working for the American People, they are working against US. These statements by these "sources" and those quoted indicate clearly without any question that the Hispanic "leadership" in the United States is comprised of people on the take with the drug cartels behind illegal immigration.

Any alignment with these people is a red line I will not cross.

All illegal aliens have to be deported swiftly to ever solve this problem and stop illegal immigration. This has nothing to do with what anyone thinks of illegal aliens from Mexico, good, bad or indifferent. This has to do with overpopulation, too many people for the number of jobs our country can produce, too many beggars, liars, law-breakers, scammers, criminals, murderers, drunks, rapists, pedophiles, drug-runners, terrorists, etc., etc., etc. that we don't need and do not want.

You are not a good person if you entered our country illegally. Period. You are a criminal, a law-breaker, and a thief. You deserve no mercy, no exception, I don't give a damn what your sad "sob" story is you fabricate to try and stay here. You stole a job and a good life from a black American, an Hispanic American, a white American by being here.

It can not be allowed to continue. We know from the amnesty of Reagan that this feeds more illegal immigration, not less, that no good came from allowing these people to remain here, and if you look at the insult the Hispanic "leadership" made on the American People with their suggestions and comments, then you need no more proof that the Hispanic "leadership" is toxic poison on the American People and the United States, no different than the NAACP, who have both sold out the citizens of the United States in favor of policies that degrade our people and uplift foreign nationals to line their own pockets.

We can not submit to this, not today, not tomorrow, not ever.

It must end now. Trump has the right plan, the right policies, and it's time ALL AMERICANS support him and his policies that favor Americans and deports illegal aliens without mercy or exception.

It's a red line we can not cross. You can not let illegal aliens remain in the United States while at the same time claiming you want to help black Americans. They are opposite goals, illegal aliens steal jobs, businesses and opportunities from black Americans. Illegal aliens have to go, they must be deported.

    Period.

Fox News reporting that Trump campaign says no change in position on deporting illegal aliens. That the story coming out of the Hispanic Leaders meeting is wrong, no basis for it, and some apparently misunderstood what Trump said when he said the illegal aliens to be deported would be dealt with humanely and efficiently.

These "sources" and quoted "Hispanic Leaders" are not honest and have lied to Univision or Univision lied to the public. Either way, Trump campaign states to Fox News, no change in position at all on illegal immigration.

I imagine Trump expected to have comments and suggestions from these "sources" and "Hispanic Leaders" on how to help legitimate citizens of Hispanic descent, i. e. unemployment, poverty, lost or slow businesses, lost wages, low incomes and crime. These are CITIZEN issues that affect real voters, illegal immigration is the cause of many of these problems, if not a major contributor to all of them, so to legalize illegal immigration is an ABSURDITY and no true "Hispanic Leader" would ask a Presidential candidate to do such an awful thing that would so harshly and negatively impact Hispanic-Americans as well as black Americans and white Americans and all Americans, and we know the first two groups are the hardest hit by illegal immigration.

SHAME ON THESE PEOPLE who did that. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME ON THEM.

    STOP THE SHAME!!

    PUT AMERICANS FIRST!!

VOTE FOR DONALD J TRUMP FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!!

I think these "sources" and those quoted in the Univision report were lying to Univision, deliberately on behalf of their PayPals, the foreign drug cartels behind illegal immigration, to create a revolt against Trump or at least raise distrust of him by those who support his immigration policies. There is really no other explanation for such a blatant and harmful lie planted on Univision.

Thank you Fox News for reporting the truth about the meeting and verifying directly with the Trump Campaign.

Trump campaign manager: A deportation force TBD

    By Tal Kopan, CNN
Updated 11:13 AM ET, Sun August 21, 2016

    Story highlights

Donald Trump was reported to have backed off the idea of deporting millions, in a meeting
That stood in sharp contrast with what has been a central theme of the GOP nomiee's campaign

Washington (CNN)It's still undecided whether Donald Trump will continue to support forced deportation of millions of undocumented immigrants living in the US, his campaign manager said Sunday.

"To be determined," said Kellyanne Conway, Trump's new campaign manager, after repeated questioning by CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union."

Conway was responding to reports about what was said in a meeting Trump held on Saturday with a Hispanic advisory council. Sources in the room told BuzzFeed that Trump spoke about a "humane and efficient" way to work with undocumented immigrants in the country currently, which was characterized by BuzzFeed as a way to legalize some and let them stay.

That would stand in sharp contrast with a central theme of the Trump campaign since the beginning, a hardline position on immigration focused on removing people in the country illegally.

Conway disputed that Trump presented a reversal of his position in the meeting.

"So what Donald Trump said yesterday in that meeting ... varied little from what he has said publicly," Conway said. "What he supports is to make sure we enforce the law, that we are respectful of those Americans who are looking for jobs, and that we are fair and humane to those who live among us."

Bash played a clip of Trump speaking about a deportation force last fall, saying it would be done "humanely," repeatedly asking if that was still the position of the campaign or whether Trump was backing off.
That was when Conway responded: "To be determined."

Conway also reiterated the long-standing Trump campaign position that the candidate won't release his tax returns, saying they are under audit. She said the campaign would not release his 2008 returns that have already exited an audit, either, repeating the message of Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort.

Conway also was asked about a 2005 comment she made about Clinton, and whether she was disparaging spouses who reconcile after cheating.

"The fact is that Hillary Clinton could not stand up to a cheating husband, so how in the world would she stand up to North Korea and some of our other enemies around the globe?" Conway said in 2005 on MSNBC, according to USA Today.

But Conway said Sunday she wasn't making a statement about Clinton's marriage.

"We don't need to conflate the two," Conway said, saying the question is about Clinton's leadership and her ability to stand up to enemies in the world.

"Leaders show up where people in need are, and they hear them, and they help them, and you saw that on full display on Friday," Conway said referring to Trump's visit to Louisiana to tour flood damage in Baton Rouge.

She also said former Fox News chief Roger Ailes does not have a "formal or informal" advisory role with the campaign, but said Ailes and Trump speak and are "old friends."

Conway, on "This Week," also answered questions about the campaign's organization. Particularly ongoing criticism about the campaign's structure and seeming lack of infrastructure in swing states.

As Trump's new campaign manager, Conway said she would assess the situation, adding the Republican National Committee would be continuing to help.

"We're working closely with the RNC, whether it's political, data, fundraising," Conway said. "We've got a great relationship with Chairman (Reince) Priebus. Talk to him daily now. And we at the campaign are going to expect Sean Spicer, the director of communications and the chief strategist at the RNC to spend more time with us."

Conway did not say Spicer was formally joining the campaign.

She also addressed Trump's statement last week -- for the first time -- that he has has "regrets" over certain, but unspecified, statements throughout his campaign. Conway was pressed on whether Trump was specifically apologizing for high-profile controversial statements, including disparaging Arizona Sen. John McCain's military record and comments he made about a Gold Star family that spoke at the Democratic convention.

Conway demurred on who specifically Trump was expressing regret to, and said he hasn't made apology calls to individuals.

"He's expressed his regret publicly and said, 'If I have caused you personal pain -- that can include me, that can include you' -- that he regrets that," Conway said.

Personally, I have thought KellyAnne Conway was an awful spokesman for the campaign. This appearance on CNN was a total fail in my opinion.

Illegal aliens have to go, Trump knows that, he's already said that, he won the nomination on that, he was leading Clinton by several points on that, there is no need to reverse, to change, to weaken or soften or tweak his position on immigration at all on any level.

Trump needs to do these interviews, not KellyAnne or anyone else. No one should speak for him because they MESS it up, with their own insecurities and lack of knowledge of the issues.

There is nothing at all that KellyAnne could say that would infuriate his supporters and potential supporters more than "be fair and humane to those who live among us".

I want to slap her. "those who live among us" are ILLEGAL ALIENS, who broke our laws, stole jobs, stole education, health care, and welfare benefits, who rape, drive drunk, murder, run drugs, run gangs, fill our prisons, and worry the crap out of us while they drain us dry as a bone.

"those who live among us" ..... what in the hell is wrong with you Conway? I'll tell you what's wrong with you, you're an open borders nut, get her out of the campaign now.

REHIRE COREY LEWANDOWSKI! You're paying him $20,000 a month in severance while paying other people to mess you up. REHIRE COREY NOW!!!

They wish to make their fantasies our realities - another sleaze move from the sneakers. Wish they would use their energies to make THEIR countries better & get out of our USA. It seems they want squatters rights. Oh yeah, here take our country just because you sneaker'd in, took jobs, babies galore on our taxpayers - NO WAY JOSE.

    Our
prisons are filled with your countrymen that YOUR country should be housing not us. We have disgraceful treasonous political leaders that are working for the corporate dollar as opposed to protecting American citizens. If our people had their way or were actually represented by our paid politicians, the sneakers would never be here now.

There is no "good" illegal alien. They're all law-breakers, they're all cheats and liars and schemers and scammers. Most run drugs or aid and abet those who do and are in one type of gang or another. They're all bad people robbing us blind and sucking us dry as a bone.
