Seven Arrested During Graham Immigration Rally
Posted by: Matt McKinney Posted by: Julia Bagg Created: 4/8/2009
Graham, NC -- Seven people were arrested during demonstrations surrounding a controversial immigration enforcement program in Alamance County.
Nearly 100 protestors on both sides of the 287-G program shouted their message near each other and the Alamance County Jail.
Raleigh-based Americans for Legal Immigration organized one side of the rally. They joined with several other state groups to support Sheriff Terry Johnson's efforts to enforce immigration laws through the 287(g) program.
"He's enforcing the law and that's what he needs to continue to do," said supporter Anthony Johnson, who lives in Alamance County. "If they don't like it tough, they need to get a life."
Pilgrims for Peace and Justice insists 287(g) is racist and unjust. They marched right by supporters twice. But those were not the tensest moments.
The Pilgrims group staged a mock arrest of a member dressed as the state of liberty. Demonstrators dressed as ICE agents brought her to the county jail, but police kept them from going inside.
The demonstrators sat down in front of the jail and refused to leave when officers asked several times. That's when police arrested them.
Protest organizer Gail Phares says the arrests themselves send a strong message. "It's just a way to help people think about what's happening," said Phares.
The 287-G program authorizes designated officers to enforce immigration laws. The Department of Homeland Security arranges the agreements with specific law enforcement agencies. Training and supervision for the program is provided by sworn U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.

| The pro amnesty protesters are wrong in their goals but use a potentially effective strategy which could be more useful for getting non committed to sign up on our side if some of us adopted it than it has been for the amnesty supporters. Most Americans oppose amnesty but do not know whether they can be effective or what to do and so stay on the sidelines. Forget getting them into the streets instead use this sort of action to get them to log on ALIPAC and NumbersUSA. |

You mean get arrested? I suppose ALIPAC members could stage a sit-in at the offices of pro amnesty politicians. |

Wouldn't it be a hoot if the demonstrators that dressed as ICE agents were charged with impersonating a federal law enforcement agent? |

Good job to all who attended.
I wish I could have been there to stand shoulder to shoulder with you! I'm just a little too far away. _________________ Diggers Realm |

Thanks for the GREAT work Digger!
Loved the video and I'm sharing it with the local community this morning.
Here's another tip that I'll pass along this morning.
A mere week after UNC Tarheels won the national title in college basketball, the school now looks to be headed for a major role in the immigration debate. Check out the stories emegring this week in the UNC paper:
New student organization has suspect intentions
Published: Sunday, April 12, 2009
Updated: Sunday, April 12, 2009
TO THE EDITOR:
A new student group called Youth for Western Civilization recently helped bring former U.S. Treasurer Bay Buchanan to UNC to speak against the celebration of multiculturalism and current immigration practices.
The student group is one chapter of a national Youth for Western Civilization movement.
According to the group’s Web site, its goal is to “educate, organize and train activists on campuses across the nation to create a subculture that will promote the survival of Western Civilization and pride in Western heritage.”
The statement goes on to decry multiculturalism and what they call “a poisonous and bigoted left-wing campus climate.”
I recognize the significance of Western culture, which is inherently multicultural, but do not support the subjugation of other peoples or cultures. Although the group purports to celebrate Western civilization, there is nothing about Shakespeare, Renaissance Painting or Transcendentalism on its Web page and its entire focus on our campus has been anti-immigrant. I’ll leave it to you to decide what its real intentions are.
Civil discourse is essential, and we respect the right of this organization and others to have strong opinions. However, Youth for Western Civilization’s language makes it clear that they are more interested in derision than dialogue.
Please consider signing the No Space for Hate petition: www.ipetitions.com/petition/nospaceforhate.
Let this be an opportunity for all of us to think critically about the language that we use to describe others and ourselves, and to become more informed about issues of diversity.

Task force pitches Latino center
Provost pledges to talk to chancellor
Katie Oliver, Staff Writer
Published: Sunday, April 12, 2009
Updated: Monday, April 13, 2009
If task force members succeed in gaining approval, UNC will dedicate the proposed Carolina Latina/o Center next spring.
The Task Force on Promoting Emerging Campus Communities pitched a draft of its proposal and a timeline for completing a Latino cultural center at a meeting Thursday with Provost Bernadette Gray-Little.
The draft provides the first time specifics for the center, after more than two years of planning.
The proposal includes not only a physical center but also the formation of a working group dedicated to exploring diversity at UNC.
John Ribó, a research assistant and member of the task force, said the center would be a chance for all existing resources to converge.
“We do need a center and we need a center for three reasons: space, synergy and visibility,” Ribó said.
He said the center would not be about self-segregation, but about representing richness in diversity.
The draft states that the center would organize educational and research opportunities, act as a vehicle for public service and provide a base for existing campus groups interested in Latino issues.
The draft proposes that the center be located in the first-floor suite of Craige North Residence Hall, an idea hatched in collaboration with the Division of Student Affairs and Housing and Residential Education.
But for now, the Carolina Latina/o Center and working group still lack approval from administrators.
During the presentation, Gray-Little asked tough questions, including how the center would prevent self-segregation.
Ron Bilbao, a member of the task force, said he thought Gray-Little was “hard to read,” but that the group answered questions well.
“I think it’s symbolic that we were able to start something, create a movement and get it to the administration,” Bilbao said.
Gray-Little said she would meet with Chancellor Holden Thorp about the project this Thursday.
She said she should be able to give the group an answer by their next meeting, which is also set to take place Thursday.
“I’m not going to ignore this,” Gray-Little said. “I’m not going to forget about it.”
Task force members Archie Ervin, associate provost for diversity and multicultural affairs, and former Student Body President J.J. Raynor also presented findings from a working group with the task force that focused more generally on multiculturalism at UNC.
Ervin said that as the group studied UNC’s diversity, they stumbled into more than they expected.
“We opened the barrel and peered inside and realized that there is more to this than we thought,” he said.
That’s when Raynor’s recommendation for a new working group came into play.
Raynor proposed a faculty, student and staff working group on multiculturalism that would explore ways of increasing outreach to the campus.
“Having a group of implementers would be helpful,” she said. “It might mean more resources for multiculturalism. For the time being, we need a group.”

I have been in "latino" clubs/groups/ what have you, which disdain and discourage non-latinos from attending. _________________ "If you love our nation, STOP illegal immigration!" |
