Border Patrol Agents Seize Unreported Cash
(Tuesday, June 30, 2009)
Blythe, Calif. – Quick-witted U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Blythe Station seized more than $12,000 in unreported cash early Monday morning.
Monday morning at about 3 a.m., Blythe Border Patrol agents stopped a 2002 Ford Explorer on Interstate 10 near Blythe, Calif. During the stop, agents noticed that the driver appeared nervous and that his story contained multiple inconsistencies.
A Border Patrol canine team alerted to the rear of the vehicle. As agents inspected the rear cargo area, they discovered a large stack of U.S. currency concealed within a hidden compartment located in the backseat of the Explorer. Border Patrol canines are trained to detect the odors of concealed people and illegal narcotics. In this instance the canine’s alert was due to the odor of illegal narcotics on the money.
Records checks confirmed that the Explorer had entered the United States from Mexico within the past 72 hours. Federal law requires that currency in excess of $10,000 must be reported when entering the country.
A total of $12,085 was seized by the Border Patrol and transported to the Blythe Station for processing.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry.
