chickens in the city

OK so here is a new one for me. I saw an hispanic woman trying to round up 5 chickens on a busy street in my neighborhood. She finally caught them all put them in their cage and went back into the apartment building (which are all 1 bedroom apts.)

Well I am horrifed that their is live poultry running lose in my neighborhood and I live in a city. So I call the code enforcement man (only 1 code enforcement officer for entire city 30,000+ people). He tells me I have to know the apartment number of where the chickens came out of. I tell him how the heck would I know I gave you the building address, I don't live in that building. I would rather be homeless. I also tell him what times I and neighbors have seen these chickens. And not to mention the building has 80+ 1 bedroom apts full of illegals. So I tell him if you were to do your job you would find many other housing and health violations. He basically told me he would take a walk down my street and if he saw the chickens he could do something as far as the other stuff his hands ouor tied. So I said then why even have this department. You oviously are the resource, you have the power with aid of police to inspect the building and that includes inspecting apartments according to the city ordinance.

He had no answer and said not much I can do in this situation.

I was fuming at this point and told him I might bring this to a newspaper. City officials not doing their jobs that taxpayers pay for.

This is insane.

Has anyone else experienced this live poultry business in your city?

Yep called the police about smelling and seeing stinky chickens down the alley yesterday. Haven't checked to see if they're gone yet. It's not the first time I've called in chickens in our neighborhood either. One time we even had live turkeys.

We also called the city about four junk cars sitting in the driveway next to ours a month ago and three of them are still there. I need to give the city a call again about them. I hate being the neighborhood tattletale.

Thank goodness we don't have apartments near us!

We are in the process of looking to buy a house far far away from the city but everytime I wikpedia a far away suburb I see due to the influx of el salvardoians or brazilians these number might be incorrect. So then I start my search again. It is pathetic I have to search for a place to live based on demographics but after living amongst illegals and the problem getting worse every day I will not live amongst them again in these numbers. They are invaders who live by their own laws, don't assimilate and treat legal American citizens and their property like crap.

I am glad I am not alone of the poultry problem. When I first witnessed the chickens I thought I was hallucinating

Over crowding is a fire department issue. See if the fire department will inspect the living arrangements. Try animal control too!

Has anyone else experienced this live poultry business in your city?

Years ago in a home I lived in with my family in a downtown residential area, the neighbors whose backyard conjoined our backyard kept a rooster or two. I thought it strange to hear one crowing at daybreak. Before I could say or report anything, another neighbor told me he and some other neighbors complained to police and believed this neighbor was keeping roosters for cockfighting. Now, why else would town dwellers have a rooster or two???

These neighbors were Vietnamese and had five children by the time I had to sell my house and move.

In another situation, the kids came over to ask me to see a baby pig. This was in May and during a very hot heat wave up to 100 degrees. They were keeping the almost newborn pig in an outside screened porch and had wrapped a blanked around it. I don't know much about farm animals but I do know that a pig's skin doesn't sweat as a human's does and wrapping it in a blanket in near 100 degree temperatures isn't humane. I told the children this and had them remove the blanket.

I asked the children if this pig was going to be a pet. They said no that their parents would raise it and have it killed for food.

Now I know that keeping farm animals in town limits is against the law and I was going to report this family but within a day or two of learning about the baby pig, I asked the children how it was doing and they said their parents had given the pig back to the uncle who had given it to them.

Different cultures and different attitudes toward animals. I remember out of these five children one of them pulling my cat's tail. A neighbor said one of the children was found hitting his dog. This same boy I also caught hitting my cat while she tried to hide under the kitchen table. Same boy I also found throwing rocks up into a tree in my yard. I asked him why? He said there was a birds nest up there and he wanted to knock it down.

These kids were mainly unsupervised even though their mother didn't work outside the home. They were also major pains in the A** when we had an above ground swimming pool.

This is the kind of crap ALL of us are going to have to live with ALL the time if the SPP kicks in. The rich will leave us to toil in our troubles without caring about who has to put up with who. Soon, it will be to expensive for most of us not to own chickens...if we don't DO something about it.

I did call the Health Dept. in my city the code and health dept. have the same number. I also informed the guy I talked to I wanted to remain anonymous in fear of retaliation. I mentioned the bird flu and other diseses having birds can bring, and I also mentioned the fact every apt has at least on sheet of plywood for a window and mish mash of other items like placemats holding in air conditioning units which could fall out any minute and kill someone if they fell from the 3rd floor.

He just could not be bothered basically.

My friend is an Animal control agent and is seeing this happen in towns around me as well as my own city. He said the towns around me are more cooperative in getting rid of these chickens but said my town is impossible to get anythign done because the city gov. is so corrupt.

I am really thinking of taking photos, documenting times with camera and photo of woman and transcribing my call to the health/code dept. and sending it anonymously to the bigger newspapers in the state.

Speaking of different cultures and different attitudes about ways with animals reminds me of some other stories.

I tattletaled on a non english speaking neighbor who had his dog chained to a building with two feet of heavy chain and no collar with no water on a 100 degree day on a cement slab.

Then there was a time when I was at a garage sale and the illegals kids were throwing rocks at a dog. I asked them to stop and as soon as I got in my car to leave they were doing it again. That time I marched the kids up to the parents at the garage sale and of course the parents spoke no english. I found a translator and told the parents what was going on but of course nothing was done about it. They just looked at me with a dumb look.

Then there was the neighbor with a cat who never fed it. I felt sorry for it and started feeding it. Then it promptly had two batches of kittens under our house. After giving away most of the kittens(kept two of the males who are now neutered) and feeding and caring for them and their mother I gave the mama cat to a local farmer. The neighbor kids figured it out(illegals) and were criticizing me for getting rid of the mama cat.

SEE??? These people don't even want to learn about our rules and regulations....they come here doing what they did back home.

In our neighborhood, we have a very young couple, says they are Native American and their Dad is part owner of a casino, where I don't know, because we do not have casino's within 4 hrs. drive from here.

This father bought this $250,000 home for them!!! They were 17 yrs old when the house was bought. Also has a Hummer, a sports car, and everyday there are more cars there...

They let their garbage sit outside for months, after the wild animals torn it to shreds, my husband called the health dept., they came out and the next day they had it cleaned up....now they have a garbage collection company picking up for them.

We live out in the country, but I know the laws are even more stringent in town than here....
