    Chickens in the city

    pb,
I think now your idea of documenting the situation well and sending
that information to one or more newspapers sounds like the most likely
to bring some results...if anything will.
As my neighborhood has acquired a new ethnic makeup over the
past 10 years, I, too, hear roosters crowing regularly, although they
thankfully are not right next door! I tried e-mailing my city health
department to inquire what plans they had for our safety in case avian
flu broke out here (mentioning my feathered neighbors), but received
no reply. I had hoped your community might be more responsive than
mine. However, people with many children bring good, new business to
a host of private businesses-from grocery chains through large discount
stores-which are of far more importance to the business community than
the tax burdens they inflict, or mere public health concerns!
If you do try your newspaper idea, please let us know what you did, and what happens! Good Luck!

It's not the chickens' fault. Whatever is done, I hope the hassles and burdens falls on the illegal aliens and not the poultry or animals who have already suffered enough. What I wouldn't give if animal cruelty carried heavier fines and punishments - in some cases - life sentences where the perps had to somehow pay for their room and board so as not to burden taxpayers.

Heck, in some sicko cases of severe animal cruelty, I'd like to see the death sentence enforced.

I also found out in my city code and health violations have been decriminalized. Well this is a reason things should be turn back to criminalization for these violations.

These people are all illegal aliens or on visas about to expire.

It is the illegals fault and if law enforcement had the abiility to check status of green cards or immigration status they would be killing to birds with one stone so to speak.

It is sad we have to live like this!

As far as the rooster situation some of you have cockfighting is a big thing south of the border countries so maybe you guys could call MSPCA and check your states laws against cockfighting. That might be an angle to get rid of the roosters. Unfortunately I have only seen chickens not roosters or I would say there is illegal cockfighting and possibly get some help!

americangirl, I am not laughing at you here, I hate chickens and if I lived in your neighborhood, it would probably be a whole lot quieter, then again, I can be a sneaky Indian when the occasion calls for it!
You hate chickens? What a hateful thing to say, I love chickens - deep fried, baked, grilled, casserole, parmesen, fricassee, linguine, etc.

First, Texas is still, technically, at least, "North of the Border", although I
don't know how much longer that will last!

However, there was a large "bust" of a cockfighting operation in Dallas
last year, involving hundreds of birds being raised and held, surprisingly
    in a quite wealthy neighborhood.

In my 'hood, I believe the roosters have "silent partner" hens, whom I
have also seen "out for strolls" in neighboring yards. However, happily
these are very well kept birds, and they remain within their own yards
    (except for their crowing).

Your situation seems very different, and it also sounds like you have
unfortunately exhausted all legal possibilities, which also appear to be
    almost non-existent.

Therefore, had you considered taking the material you had considered
sending to a newspaper and sending it instead to your Congressional Representative with a personal letter? It's an election year, and they
are holding forums on immigation reform legislation across the entire
nation, so there couldn't be a more favorable time to present your problem, and to ask your Representative to help you work toward a
solution for the public good--both human and animal--not only in your
locality, but also within your state.

    panda,

Send an anonymous note to several apartments in that building. Tell them the next time you see the chickens loose in the street that they are going to end up on your dinner table.

    Texas2Step,

That was a murder investigation. Some family members were murdered in that house and it was surrounded by roosters.

Could you not send the information you had thought of sending to a major
newspaper to your Congressional Representative with a cover letter since
all avenues seem to be closed to you locally?

This is an election year, and they are holding hearings on immigration
legislation nationally, so this would seem to be an ideal time to do so.
If might be in his/her interest to take action toward reform in this area
for the benefit of both humans and animals on a state-wide basis!

(You might also send a copy of that same information to your local
newspaper at the same time, advising them that you were also contacting
your Congressman about the problem. Local news which may never be
published in a large, state-wide newspaper is considered "Big News" to a
    local paper!)

I posted a 4th reply to pb because my third one was not published
after I submitted it. However, as soon as I finished my 4th post,
there it was! So, sorry about so much wordiness! Dixie, I'm sure
you're right about the murder + cockfighting roosters: so much
crime to keep up with for those who are not professionally trained!

    Texas2Step,

I remember an arial shot of the house and all the covered shelters dotting the property. The other family members were trying to push past the cops and get into the house. Hmmm, wonder what they wanted to take out and cover up.
