On Monday, April 24th, President Bush addressed the Orange County Business Council in California. In his speech, the President flat out rejected mass deportation of illegal aliens saying, "Massive deportation of the people here is unrealistic. It's just not going to work." As well, the President again endorsed some sort of plan to provide a path to citizenship for illegal aliens in the country (amnesty).
What the President is apparently not considering is that there is a third way -- the practical way -- of "attrition" for dealing with the 12 million illegal aliens in our country. By stepping up interior enforcement efforst, such as workplace verification, many illegal aliens will begin to self-deport as they are unable to access jobs and other benefits.
As a spokesperson for Rep. Tom Tancredo's officd said, "No one is talking about mass deportations...Our approach is one of attrition where you make it difficult for an illegal alien to get a job in this country or to access our social services, so that over time, illegal aliens stop coming to this country and the ones already here go home."
The President is scheduled to meet with Democratic and Republican congressional leaders this week to encourage them to pass a guestworker-amnesty bill.
As a reminder, just prior to Congress' Easter recess, the Senate failed to pass its immigration reform bill containing a massive amnesty-guestworker bill. Under consideration were three main proposals. One was passed by the Senate Judiciary Committee and crafted by its chair, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA). The Specter proposal would reward illegal aliens with amnesty and add 30 million foreign workers and their dependents over the next decade. Another proposal, S. 2454, was introduced by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, MD (R-TN). S. 2454 would add 20 million foreign workers and their dependents over the next year. It would double the annual allotment of green cards. Finally, a proposal by Sens. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Mel Martinez (R-FL) would produce a tiered amnesty and add at least 35 million foreign workers and their dependents over the next decade.
At this point it is unclear whether or not one of these immigration bills will be brought to the Senate floor again, but President Bush is pushing Democratic and Republican leaders to pass some sort of amnesty-guestworker proposal.
