$500K bail for accused serial rapist

A 28-year-old South San Francisco auto body worker accused of raping two women and attempting to sexually assault three more is in custody on $500,000 bail for one alleged attack that happened in his work complex while authorities continue tying him to the other incidents.
Raul Guitterez Contreras appeared in court for the second time this week to consolidate the charges of attempted rape, burglary and assault with a deadly weapon with a prior driving while intoxicated case and delayed a plea in both. After asking for the court to appoint an attorney, Contreras was ordered back to court Feb. 16 and Judge Craig Parson set bail at $500,000.
Contreras, a transient and an illegal immigrant, was arrested last Friday at his South San Francisco workplace, less than 24 hours after police released a sketch to the public. The linchpin for the person who tipped off police to Contreras’ place of employment was a cut above his eye inflicted by one of his alleged victims Wednesday in the 200 block of Maple Street. The victim in that case fought back, cutting her attacker’s left eye. One of Contreras’ co-workers noticed a similar cut over Contreras’ left eye and told a relative, who in turn called the South San Francisco Police Department Friday morning. Police located Contreras at the auto body shop at which he worked on the 200 block of Maple Street. He was arrested on a $5,000 arrest warrant issued after failing to appear in court for a Sept. 22 DUI arrest. Contreras remained in custody on the warrant this week while prosecutors ensured the case against him for the sexual assaults is strong.
On Feb. 7, according to one alleged victim, a man smelling of alcohol and wearing surgical gloves followed a her into her South Maple Avenue business and asked to use her phone. When she questioned him, police say he grabbed her and a struggle ensued. During the fight, the man broke the woman’s cell phone and the woman struck her attacker with a metal object, cutting him above his left eye. The man then motioned for her to take her pants off. The woman briefly distracted the man by calmly talking to him before running into the bathroom, where she locked the door and called 911 on a second cell phone she was carrying.
Although he is only facing charges from one incident currently, the assumption is that more will be added as DNA tests are completed. So far, Contreras is tentatively linked to a February 2006 rape in Colma, two attempted rapes in South San Francisco’s Orange Park in September and November, and a rape on South Linden Avenue in South San Francisco, also in November.
The description of the Feb. 10 attacker matches accounts of earlier sexual assaults in the city, according to police.
Contreras allegedly also confessed to the one attempted attack.
He has no prior criminal history in San Mateo County aside from the DUI arrest, said court records clerks.

More charges filed in sexual assaults

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - New charges were filed Friday linking a suspected serial rapist to two more incidents that occurred in South San Francisco.
Raul Gutierrez Contreras, 28, already charged in connection with an attempted rape Feb. 8, has now been linked by prosecutors to two other attacks that occurred Feb. 10, 2006, and Nov. 1.
The new charges — a total of 20 new counts against him — stem from DNA test results, although Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe did not specify which cases involved DNA evidence.
“DNA tests were done and are part of our evidence in a couple of these cases,” Wagstaffe said. Prosecutors are still investigating whether Contreras is linked to other incidents occurring in South San Francisco in the past year. “We are looking at a couple more cases.”
Described by police as a transient and a possible illegal immigrant, Contreras was arrested Feb. 12 after a tipster informed police that he was working at a South San Francisco auto body shop with a cut above his left eye.
Police believe he received the cut in a Feb. 8 attack on a 34-year-old woman that took place at 6:30 a.m. as she was unlocking a door to a business on the 200 block of South Maple Avenue. He allegedly forced his way in and tried dragging her into a bathroom before she escaped, prosecutors say.
It was the latest in a string of incidents in the area involving women being attacked and, in some cases, raped. The charges filed Friday include counts of oral copulation, digital penetration, sexual battery and rape. Contreras faces life in prison on 26 felony counts on top of misdemeanor drunken driving charges relating to a prior warrant. After the arrest was made, South San Francisco police Sgt. Joni Lee said Contreras “partially admitted” to the Feb. 8 assault but denied involvement in other incidents.
Contreras is scheduled to appear in court March 15 to enter a plea. His attorney, Eric Hove, did not return calls Friday for comment.
Mayor Rich Garbarino lauded the Police Department for its persistence in the case, which frightened many residents in the area. He said the city is exploring ways of improving lighting in certain neighborhoods in response.
“The community overall has a sense of relief,” he said. “It has to be scary; in particular for women who are just doing their daily routine. If the alleged suspect is in fact guilty, then he’s in custody and that would make not only South San Francisco streets safer, but other cities along the corridor as well.”
Police have not released Contreras’ photo yet because they are still interviewing women and do not want to taint their memories, officials said Friday.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
