The head of Georgia's university system asked a legislative committee to think of the system's reputation when considering a bill that will bar illegal immigrants from attending state colleges and universities.

University system Chancellor Erroll Davis spoke Tuesday at a House higher education committee on a bill sponsored by Rep. Tom Rice, a Norcross Republican.

Rice said the legislation is absolutely necessary to keep an illegal immigrant from taking the place of any citizen or legal resident.

Davis said rules the Board of Regents adopted in October will keep such illegal students from taking seats from citizens and legal immigrants.

He said the university system needs to remain competitive continue to attract the very best students and faculty.
