Wary Iowans force St. John to tack right on immigration

Wary Iowans force St. John to tack right on immigration
    March 20, 2007 by Allahpundit

“Immigration is probably a more powerful issue here than almost anyplace that I’ve been,” Mr. McCain said after a stop in Cedar Falls.

As he left Iowa, Mr. McCain said he was reconsidering his views on how the immigration law might be changed. He said he was open to legislation that would require people who came to the United States illegally to return home before applying for citizenship, a measure proposed by Representative Mike Pence, Republican of Indiana. Mr. McCain has previously favored legislation that would allow most illegal immigrants to become citizens without leaving the country…

“Pence has this touchback proposal,” Mr. McCain said at a news conference. “I said hey, let’s consider that if that’s a way we can get some stuff.”

Nine months after Pence proposed the touchback plan, I still don’t see the point. If it’s a rubber stamp where illegals cross back into Mexico, queue up, and then get their work visa in short order, then there’s no point to it.

Just give them the visas here. If it’s not a rubber stamp, if they’re expected to go home, wait for months, and then be readmitted only if they meet certain qualifications, then they’re obviously not going to go home. It sounds “reasonable” and “middle ground,” though, which is why McCain’s warming to it.

What is he saying , give them the visa here or make them go home and come in the legal way??? Can anyone understand which he is for???

I think meeting the qualifications is going to be a problem for alot of them. They should also have to have health checks!

and if they don't go home then it should be a felony for them to be here!!

Don't be fooled. The Pence plan or anything like it is just another ploy to make people think it is not amnesty. So, they have to do the Texas two-step (step-out, then step-in) to become legalized.

This is amnesty!!! Any arrangement that allows those who are already here illegally to continue living here is amnesty.

Your right Kate, I know that and I run AMOK!!

But I still don't understand him about the visa's. maybe it would be a way to get them to to home quietly. How many years would it take to process that many people??

Obviously you still aren't listening and didn't hear a thing if you are proposing the Pence plan.

if we don't know who is illegally here to begin with how do we know who is returning home touching that soil then returning. or people who just want in, say they were here and now returning. let's just make this easy and fair, enforce the laws on the books and secure our borders.

The PENCE PLAN - all 280 pages - goes wayyyyyy beyond AMNESTY AND directly into the NAU/SPP!

Make no mistake, this plan is the END OF U.S. SOVEREIGNTY and worse by miles than anything kennedy came up with.

But............they know that and PLANNED this exactly as it's unfolding

    right on schedule mccain, eh?
