The steep rise of immigration into Britain has been demonstrated by new figures that show more than 1,500 schools are dominated by pupils who speak English as a second language.
The dramatic increase began in 1997. In that year there were 866 schools in England where more than half of pupils spoke English as a second language, statistics released by the Department for Children, Schools and Families show.
By 2009 that figure had ricketed to 1,545 schools, a rise of 78 per cent over 12 years.

On the latest figures there are 1,284 primary schools, 210 secondary schools and 51 special schools where more than half the pupils come from a non-English speaking background.
Around one in seven youngsters in primary schools - almost 500,000 - did not speak English as their first language. In Secondary Schools the figure stands at 364,000, just over one in ten.
Critics say the high proportions are another sign of the impact Labour's open door on immigration and risks hampering integration.
Across England, the number of schools where more than 50 per cent of pupils spoke English as a second language has risen by 679, but the increase has not been evenly spread across the country.
London boasts the highest rise, with the North West having the second-highest number of such pupils, followed by the South East.

One of the areas with the biggest influx is Newham, in east London.

Other London councils finding themselves boasting a wealth of cultures and languages are Tower Hamlets, Ealing, Brent, Haringey.
In the south of England the council with the most schools with this issue are Luton, Slough, Peterborough and Bristol.
Among the critics of the increase was Migration Watch UK's Sir Andrew Green, who said: 'The only solution is to get immigration down to manageable proportions.'
He was echoed by shadow immigration minister Damian Green, who called for a sharp cut to the number of immigrants accepted by Britain.
