As Other States Get Tough, Immigrants Turn to Texas

Thousands of illegal immigrants are flooding into Texas, but they're not crossing the Mexico-United States border.

As states such as Oklahoma and California toughen up on immigration, many are opting to relocate to the Lone Star State.

"They are working people, and they're going to go find a job, and if they got to travel across the nation to find a job, then that's what they are going to do," community activist Renny Rosas said.

While there is no way to know how many illegal immigrants have come to Texas from other states, experts say the number may top 1 million.

Work for illegal immigrants in Oklahoma dried up after the state passed one of the strictest immigration laws in the country.

"When laws like that are passed, (and) they have that kind of an attitude, they really look to hide," Rosas said.

Oklahoma's House Bill 1804 makes it a felony to transport or shelter illegal immigrants.

Oklahoma residents such as Merle Owens, of Colbert, Okla., said they support the law.

"If they are here illegally, then they need to go; that's my opinion," he said.

Towns such as Colbert, which sits just across the Texas border, lost half of their population.

"We don't need a house full of illegals taking jobs, welfare, whatever, when we got people that need those services," Owens said.

Illegal immigrants say the laws in Texas are friendlier.

One illegal immigrant who left California two months ago after the state got tough on immigration said he came straight to Texas, where it is "a little better."

He said in Spanish that he came to Texas "out of necessity" to find work.

"When they come down here, they feel a lot more comfortable being here," said Corina Ortega, the daughter of an immigrant.

Ortega, a U.S. citizen, said she has many family members who are in the country illegally.

"All they want to do is work," she said.

Regardless of how many Americans they displace. They are self-centered and quite arrogant.

Texas, you better take a lesson from Oklahoma and make them LESS comfortable, or you're the next California. (I'm not yet buying that California has gotten tougher. I'll have to see proof of that one.)

We'd be dancing in the streets if we lost half our IA population.

??? I have no idea when CA got "tough" on IA's. If we did, then TX I'm sorry!

....and what constitutes "a little better"?? When you can get more bennies? When they don't check backrounds? When you can drive a car with no license and get free health care? Why exactly did you leave CA and come straight to TX? I think it is more than to find work.

I really feel sorry for you TX.

Maybe I'll relocate my family to Oklahoma as we live in a stupid "Sanctuary City'.

California is getting harder on illegals? Really?

Right everybody. California is still easier on illegal immigrants than any place else in the west. They are still working out in the open, buying goods and renting houses with no problem, and getting all the social benefits that currently exist for legal citizens. No enforcement agency is after them and there is no evidence of public discrimination. They have all their own newspapers, television and radio stations, protective politicians, thousands of Hispanic assistance agencies, and even free food for Thanksgiving. In fact, they have more at their disposal than any other ethnicity in California.

Believe the author meant to say Arizona, not California.

If there is any state that could be considered a sanctuary state it would be California. Probably the cost of living here that has caused many illegals to disperse to rest of the country.

Sorry Dixie that is bad news for Texas, but then maybe the cost will wake Texas up and they will do something about it.

Oklahoma's House Bill 1804 makes it a felony to transport or shelter illegal immigrants.
It is already a crime in every state to aid and abet illegal aliens in anyway according to the "Immigration Nationality Act of 1996" but then we all know Janet and Obama ignore the laws and make up their own.

They can work in their own countries too, we don't need or want them here. They are here for the handouts given to dropped anchors, that's the only reason they're here. Only difference is now WE know it.
