(New from Paul Jurgens, KFGO, Fargo) FARGO, N.D. (AP) Authorities say 26 suspected illegal aliens were turned over to Border Patrol after a random check of roofers in Fargo today.
Assistant Attorney General Parrell (PAYR'-ul) Grossman was leading a team of investigators. They were checking for transient merchants licenses and workers compensation and unemployment insurance.
Homeowner George Calkins says he hopes his roof work will be completed. Grossman says authorities are not interested in stopping the work.
The Border Patrol is checking the status of many of the workers.
Grossman says several out-of-state contractors have Fargo addresses and phone numbers to make it appear that they're local companies.

Illegals discovered?

State officials found seven more workers believed to be illegal immigrants Thursday during contractor compliance checks in Fargo.
Since Wednesday, officials have detained 33 people suspected of working illegally in the country. The workers were found repairing roofs at five Fargo homes.
Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem said it’s common for contractors to flock to an area after a severe storm. The Fargo area was hit with baseball-sized hail Sept. 21.
State officials are checking contractors to make sure they are complying with state regulations.
On Thursday, officials stopped at a home along Fargo’s 24th Avenue South to check American Residential and Commercial (A.R.C.) Construction of Kansas City, Mo., said Consumer Protection Director Parrell Grossman.
Workers were on the roof, but the crew didn’t seem to have a job foreman, Grossman said.
U.S. Border Patrol was contacted and determined seven workers were in the country illegally, but two fled before they could be taken into custody, Grossman said.
Similar to Wednesday, officials were again told the contractor wasn’t to blame and a subcontractor was doing the work, he said.

Company apologizes for incident involving illegal immigrant suspects
Fargo, N.D. (AP) A roofing company has issued an apology after suspected illegal immigrants were found at one of its Fargo work sites.
Indianapolis-based CMR Construction and Roofing says it rigorously follows federal and state requirements when hiring new employees or subcontractors.
It says the problem is that there is no accurate way to verify the validity of some identification documents.
State officials say they found seven suspected illegal immigrants at a CMR site. A total of 31 men suspected of being in the country illegally were turned over to the Border Patrol last week during two days of contractor compliance checks involving roofers in Fargo.
Hundreds of Fargo-area homes are in need of roof work because of a September hail storm.
