17 dead after riot breaks out at Juárez Cereso prison

Seventeen people were killed late Monday night during a riot inside the Cereso prison in Juárez, a police spokesman said.

Multiple gunshots were heard from inside the prison as soldiers, state and federal police officers were deployed to the prison. Authorities quickly formed a barrier around the prison before entering, authorities said.

As of midnight, 16 men and one woman died, and two people were wounded, Juárez city officials said.

Officials identified 16 of those killed as follows, along with the crimes they were charged with:

Abraham Galindo, 49. Homicide.
Roberto Jiménez Lara, 32. Kidnapping.
Luis Adrian Estrada Pérez, 28. Kidnapping.
Juan José Orozco Linares, 38. Extortion.
Ana Cristina Andrade Gallegos, 23. Extortion and robbery.
Nicolás FrÃ*as Salas, 35. Homicide.
Jesús Manuel MartÃ*nez Ortiz, 29. Robbery.
Daniel Osvaldo Salas Valdez, 30. Auto theft.
David Hernández Hernández, 28. Robbery.
Luis Manuel Guerrero Alvarado, 40. Robbery.
Venancio Javier Flores Peréz, 26. Robbery.
José Alberto Vázquez, 21. Robbery.
Jesús Daniel Simental Heredia, 18. Robbery.
Miguel Alejandro Rodelo, 22. Robbery.
Jesús Manuel Hernández Nájera, 20. Robbery.
Juan José RodrÃ*guez Sánchez, 27. Robbery.

The Norte newspaper reported on its website that some prisoners may have been disguised as security guards and were heavily armed during a possible escape attempt.

At the same time, authorities were also dealing with a burning car on Norzagaray boulevard and a shootout between gunmen and federal police on Eje Vial Juan Gabriel.
