Group of Nearly 250 Immigrants Arrested at New Mexico Border

ANTELOPE WELLS, N.M. (AP) — U.S. Border Patrol agents in New Mexico say a group of nearly 250 immigrants are in custody after turning themselves in to authorities at the Antelope Wells Port of Entry.

They say the group was located early Wednesday after being smuggled up to the New Mexico border and many claimed they needed medical care.

Border Patrol officials say a majority of the 247 immigrants are from Central America.

The group includes families with small children and unaccompanied juveniles.

Border Patrol officials say at least 24 large groups of immigrants have been trafficked by smugglers in the Lordsburg area of New Mexico since the start of the fiscal year.

Nearly 250 illegal immigrants arrested in New Mexico after crossing border, seeking medical care, Border Patrol says

Border Agents arrested 247 illegal immigrants, many in need of medical attention, after group members turned themselves in early Wednesday.

According to agents working at the Camp Bounds Forward Operating Base, a large group of migrants crossing the border into New Mexico illegally, turned themselves just after midnight on Wednesday.

The group, made up largely of family units and unaccompanied minors from Central America, needed medical care. Members were believed to be a part of a smuggling operation.

"Unscrupulous organized smugglers are exploiting the area and the proximity to the border to move large groups of people. These groups of people are told where to cross and turn themselves in with smugglers never having to cross the border themselves and risk apprehension,” a press release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.

Officials have called the journey migrants take from Mexico to the U.S. “dangerous” and “treacherous.”

A 7-year-old Guatemalan girl died last month after taking a similar journey. Although she died in Border Patrol custody, officials said a lack of food and water for days at a time ultimately led to her death.

Well, there's over 200 more that will soon reap the reward of the Trump administrations catch & release program.

250 turned themselves in. We not only can't keep them out---BP and the Military can not even spot 250, unless they turn themselves in.

Where is the military? Has anyone seen or heard anything about what they are doing since the photo ops of the wire?

Has our CIC got them 100 miles inland making Easter Baskets for the illegals or what are they doing?

Jan 4, 2019 - The troops would add 160 miles of wire to existing fencing, and their deployment would likely extend the military's border mission past Jan. 31. . .

We are being led in circles. There have been reports of them removing some of the wire. Now reports of being sent to add 160 miles (no photos or reports of this actually happening. I have learned not to trust the--- being sent to--or planning to. I suppose it is all a moot point anyway, they can still come in through the Port of Entry or get stuck in the wire and BP run to their rescue, complete with medical aide and all the frills.

How does 250 go undetected. Where is the technology (whatever that is suppose to indicate) the politicians are forever talking about.
I assumed (apparently wrongly so) that technology would at least alert BP to a stampede of illegals crossing.

There is a whole lot of border that has nothing that stops illegal aliens from strolling right into the United States.

I know that. I've watched the fly over video, seen the map of all the (no fencing) zones ect. What I am asking is about cameras, sensors, the technology the politicians keep mentioning. Of course, the politicians want us to believe technology will stop them, we know better. It would at least alert BP to their crossing. Apparently we do not even have that since 250 can turn themselves in today, 187 tomorrow, and BP estimates they only catch one in five. How many miles have this (technology) how many miles do not have it? Is there a map of that?

It is just unbelievable the mess this is in. We can take pics from space, we can take pics underwater, we walked on the moon over 45 years ago, poor people have security cameras on their front and back door, but......

    Mind boggling!

More than 200 migrants detained by Border Patrol in desolate New Mexico border

A look at Antelope Wells border facilities in New Mexico

The U.S. Border Patrol Bounds Forward Operating Base is seen in May 2017 in Antelope Wells, New Mexico. The operating base is adjacent to an international port of entry on the U.S.-Mexico border.

A group of more than 200 Central American migrants surrendered to U.S. Border Patrol agents Wednesday in a remote part of New Mexico, officials said.

The group of 247 men, women and children was the latest in a spike in large migrant groups arriving at the desolate desert border in Antelope Wells, officials said.

The migrants crossed the border shortly after midnight and surrendered to agents at the tiny Antelope Wells port of entry, the Border Patrol said in a news release.

Antelope Wells is the same location where a 7-year-old Guatemalan girl, Jakelin Caal Maquin, crossed the border with her father and was detained by Border Patrol before the girl died on Dec. 8 at an El Paso hospital.

An autopsy reporting the formal cause of death for Jakelin is pending.

Many of the migrants, including families and unaccompanied children, claimed to need medical care, the Border Patrol said.

The Border Patrol is seeing an influx of large migrants groups being taken to the border in Antelope Wells in New Mexico's remote Bootheel region.

The migrants were detained by agents at Camp Bounds Forward Operating Base, a Border Patrol substation intended to allow agents to deploy quicker in the remote region.

Antelope Wells is about a 90-minute drive to the Lordsburg Border Patrol Station, which covers the western New Mexico region.

The Border Patrol reported that smuggling groups transport groups to the border and then tell the migrants to cross and surrender to agents in the desolate desert region.

Since the start of fiscal year 2019 in October, there have been 24 groups of 100 or more migrants detained by Border Patrol in the Lordsburg region, the Border Patrol said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials have said they need additional resources to deal with the influx of migrants in the Bootheel of New Mexico.

During a Dec. 18 tour with members of Congress, CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said that smugglers found a "seam" that they are exploiting on the New Mexico border.

Migrants have told agents that smugglers arrange buses to take groups from Guatemala to New Mexico, arriving at the U.S. border within four or five days, McAleenan said.

At the border, migrants cross a barbed-wire fence and surrender to Border Patrol agents in a bid for asylum, McAleenan said.

The Antelope Wells station typically only had four border agents on duty at any time because only about 30 vehicles cross the border there each day, McAleenan said.

Additional agents have been deployed to the Antelope Wells region, CBP said.
