3 National Guardsmen arrested on suspicion of immigrant smuggling

    Associated Press - June 11, 2007 10:45 AM ET

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Texas National Guard says three Guardsmen have been arrested on suspicion of illegal immigrant smuggling.

A National Guard statement released Monday says the arrests happened Friday in the US Border Patrol's Laredo sector after a Border Patrol investigation. No identities were released.

According to the statement, the soldiers were participating in Operation Jump Start. That's a joint effort by federal and local law enforcement and National Guard elements to discourage illegal immigration.

The statement says the Texas adjutant general's office is cooperating with the Border Patrol in the investigation. It says state military officials will ultimately decide whether the soldiers face military justice. But that would not interfere with any civilian law enforcement action.

The Texas adjutant general, Lieutenant Governor Chuck Rodriguez, says the development made him "extremely disappointed."

Send them to jail and get rid of their benefits and out of the guard. We don't need to give them the benefits that they receive in the guard. We need these benefits for Americans and not traitors.
