LA JOLLA, Calif. - Four suspected smugglers were taken into custody early Tuesday morning in the area of Black's Beach, police said.
The suspects, all men, were taken into custody in the 2800 block of Torrey Pines Scenic Drive about 1:30 a.m., according to San Diego police Officer Dan Lasher.
The arrests were made by US Customs and Border Protection officials, with assistance from San Diego police officers, he said.
The arrests came after border officials spotted and tracked a pair of jet skis that ended up arriving at the beach. It was not immediately clear what contraband the suspects allegedly tried to smuggle into the country.
Investigators said the jet ski operators came ashore and left the scene.

TORREY PINES (CNS) - Federal agents arrested four undocumented immigrants early Tuesday near Black's Beach, where human smugglers had dropped them off after ferrying them into the United States by sea aboard personal watercraft.
Border Patrol personnel spotted the group entering U.S. waters out of Mexico about 11:30 p.m. Monday, agency spokesman Gerardo Gutierrez said.
About two hours later, a federal Office of Air and Marine helicopter crew watched four men get off the two water scooters in the surf off the 2800 block of Torrey Pines Scenic Drive. Border agents arrived a short time later and took the Mexican nationals into custody on the beach.
The smugglers fled to the south in the ocean aboard the watercraft and evaded capture, Gutierrez said.
