COLUMBUS, Ohio — Six illegal immigrants abducted a woman and her 2-year-old daughter in an attempt to recover a drug debt, federal authorities alleged in an indictment Tuesday.
The indictment alleges the five men from Mexico and one from El Salvador kidnapped the pair in December 2009 to try to compel a third person to pay a drug debt. The indictment does not name that person.
Columbus police learned of the plot and stopped the men as they were leaving a home where the mother and child were being held, authorities said.
The woman and child were rescued safely, said Fred Alverson, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio. There was no Columbus telephone listing for the woman.
Each man is charged with one count each of conspiracy to commit hostage-taking and hostage-taking, both punishable by up to life in prison; and six counts each of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, which carries five years in prison, and six counts each of possession of a firearm by an illegal alien, which carries up to 10 years in prison.
The indicted are Martin Valdez Zavala, 21; Matias Gallegos-Villagomez, 24; Guadalupe Villa-Rodriquez, 30; Jorge Toledo-Corzo, 28; and 40-year-old Augustin Galvin-Garcia, also known as Pedro Rodriguez Solano, all of Mexico. Mauricio Martinez-Diaz, 28, of El Salvador, also was indicted.
Federal court documents did not provide hometowns for the men or names of their attorneys. All six are in custody.
