8 people shot at La Raza Low Rider Car Show

Fire Dept.: 8 injured in shooting in Seattle area

    By MANUEL VALDES, Associated Press
    5:47 p.m., July 23, 2011

SEATTLE — People screamed and ran as eight people were injured in a shooting Saturday at a crowded suburban Seattle parking lot, authorities and witnesses said.

The gunfire broke out at a low-rider car show at La Plaza shopping center on Pacific Highway in Kent, and victims were taken to the hospital, said Kent Fire Department Lt. Pat Pawlak.

Harborview Medical Center spokeswoman Susan Gregg said eight people - six men and two women - were admitted to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"They're all in satisfactory condition," she said. "All conscious and talking."

She said ages of the wounded ranged from 14 to 32. The victims, she said, were hit on a foot, leg and chest, among other places.

There were no reported fatalities. KOMO News reports no one has been arrested.

Kent police Sgt. Jarod Kasner told KOMO News that the shootings may have been gang-related, and that the gang unit has been called on the scene.

Adriana Velazco, a manager at a Los Cabos Mexican Restaurant in the shopping center, said she saw two people on the ground after the shooting. She said that she didn't hear the gunshots but was told by an off-duty police officer dining at the restaurant to hide in the back of the restaurant along with patrons.

"We saw people running all over the place," Velazco said. "People were knocking on the door of restaurant but we weren't allowed to open the door."

The car show, listed as La Raza low-rider car show on a Latino events website, was in the parking lot of the shopping center, which is located along the busy Pacific Highway. Kent is about 20 miles south of Seattle. The city is a mix of suburban developments and older industrial centers.

Eight people were injured in a shooting at a car show at a crowded Seattle shopping centre after a fight reportedly broke out after a man insulted another car owner's paint work.

Several gunshots were fired after witnesses said two groups of people started fighting at the low rider car show at the La Plaza shopping centre in Kent, Washington yesterday.

One man reportedly pulled out a gun and started firing shots as children stood just a few feet away.

Shooting: Witnesses said that a fight broke out between car owners when one insulted another's paint job

Kent police spokesman Sergeant Jarod Kasner said that the shooting began after a fight broke out among some of the people at the show of around 30 customised vehicles.

Car show: Around 30 customised vehicles were being exhibited
'I saw a lot of people running everywhere, running across the street, then the cops showed up,' said Trish Harvey, who told the TV station she heard ten shots.

She said the shootings ended what had been a 'very peaceful celebration'.
Another witness, who was inside a nearby Subway restaurant, said there were about 200 to 300 people at the car show at the time of the shooting.
He said that he hustled people inside the restaurant and locked the doors after he heard ten to 12 gunshots.

Scene: Police said that suspects fled from the shopping centre car park
Another witness said that there were young children standing just a few feet away from the shooting, which started when two groups got into a fight.

'We tried to get all the little kids,' she told KOMO.
Kent Fire Department spokesman Lieutenant Pat Pawlak said that seven people were taken to hospital

He said that a total of eight people were injured, but one man did not want to go to the hospital.

12 wounded as gunfire erupts at Kent car show

At least 12 people were shot at a crowded lowrider car show in Kent on Saturday, creating chaos as cars sped from the scene and frightened spectators ran for the safety of nearby shops.

Patrons and employees in the stores and restaurants locked the doors and crouched in backrooms to escape the gunfire.

"First I heard like six shots, then they kept going," said Alejandro Lara, a witness.

He said he saw a single gunman firing from the front of the shopping center into the parking lot full of people.

The wounded didn't have life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Police did not know Saturday evening how many shooters there were, and they were continuing to interview victims and witnesses. No arrests had been made by Saturday night.

"People were leaving as we were coming, and victims were our first priority," said Kent police Sgt. Jarod Kasner.

A fight broke out just before the shooting, which occurred at the La Plaza shopping center, Kasner said. It is in the 23200 block of Pacific Highway South, where it meets the Kent-Des Moines Road.

Eight people — six males and two females ranging from age 14 to 32 — were taken to Harborview Medical Center with injuries to arms, legs, feet and torso.

Four were treated and released and four were to be admitted overnight, Harborview spokeswoman Susan Gregg said. All were in satisfactory condition.

Four others were shot, at least two of whom went to other hospitals, police said.

Kasner described a chaotic scene as cars sped away from the La Raza lowrider show after the shooting at about 4:15 p.m.

Erica Parker said she was working at a Subway shop near the car show when she and other employees heard gunshots. People started running in, she said, screaming, "He's got a gun!"

Witnesses said the La Raza car show had been going on in the parking lot during the weekend. About 50 lowrider or classic cars were on display.

Some of the car exhibitors blamed the violence on groups of young people who showed up at the party "mugging," or staring each other down.

"It was a good show, but a bad vibe," said Cesar DePale, at a small gathering of self-described "veteranos" at a nearby detailing and body shop Saturday night.

He had been at the show, flaunting dancing hydraulics on his maroon 1986 Buick.

Leo Salazar, another exhibitor, said he saw a single young gunman.

When the shots began, car owners pushed each other to the pavement for cover, said DePale. "It was real scary. I don't own a gun. I've never even heard a gunshot before. That's how mellow I am."

DePale said he's been to 10 similar shows before that were peaceful.

A poster for the event said it was a free, all-ages lowrider show sponsored by Lokos Music. Besides a car show, there was music at a sound stage where a crowd of people were gathered at the time shots broke out.

After the shooting, drink cans and bottles were left scattered as people rushed from the scene. Within an hour, all the cars were gone.

At Pro Nails near the scene, employee Tran Tran said she heard a couple of pops, which she thought might be gunfire or firecrackers.

Shortly after, a mother with two children went into the store, saying she had been standing right next to a gunman and was scared.

About 10 people rushed into the back restrooms of the nail shop after locking the front door, Tran said.

The owner of a nearby restaurant said an off-duty police officer had just finished a meal with his family when the shooting started.

He left to go to his car, but returned to the restaurant and told everyone to get away from the windows.

The restaurant owner, who did not want her name in the paper, said she had been intimidated throughout the weekend by the rowdy crowds at the car show. Before the shooting, she said, she saw two men fighting on a corner at the edge of the plaza.

"Hopefully, this will be a wake-up call to law enforcement," to staff the shows, said a small-business owner who identified himself as Marco M.

Police haven't confirmed yet whether the violence was gang-related, Sgt. Kasner said. They are interviewing dozens of witnesses and sorting out different stories from them, he said.

    I've been trying to find out if the second mass Seatle area shootings at the casino was also part of the Hispanic culture of the region, but they're being pretty tight lipped about the shooter and victims. {At the casino where 7 were shot}

Also the Texas roller rink shootings, 6 dead, were commited by a Vietnamese immigrant.
