9 Chinese nationals, 2 Cubas and 1 Bahamian caught coming ashore in Florida
~ Think about the Deadly Chinese Coronavirus
ICE: 4 arrests related to immigrants who came ashore in Palm Beach
WEST PALM BEACH, FL (CBS12) — Immigration authorities said Saturday four people have now been arrested, connected with the 12 immigrants who came ashore and were detained Friday in the Town of Palm Beach.
As is customary, it won’t be known exactly what the four people are being charged with until they make their initial appearances before a judge sometime next week.
However, Nestor Yglesias, the South Florida spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), had earlier said smuggling from the Bahamas was suspected.
Border Patrol agents, Sheriff’s deputies and Town of Palm Beach police officers eventually succeeded in capturing all 12 people seen running from a small boat that came ashore Friday, near the north end of Palm Beach Island.
Generally in cases like this federal agents arrest those they can connect to the smuggling operation, and those previously deported, but trying to renter the country again.
Of those apprehended Friday, ICE said nine were Chinese nationals, two were Cuban and one Bahamian.
Historically Haitians and Cubans made up the bulk of those trying to come ashore in South Florida, but it seems the number of Chinese arrivals is on the rise.
This week the Miami Herald reported on two cases of high end yachts allegedly being used to bring Chinese nationals to South Florida.
One incident last July led to the apprehension of 12 Chinese. The feds charged the captain and a crew member.
The most recent incident in December led to 14 Chinese and one Bahamian taken into custody. The yacht captain was arrested.
Chinese companies have dramatically increased their investment and presence in the Bahamas in recent years. That could account for at least some of the uptick in illegal Chinese arrivals.
The focus on Chinese being smuggled into South Florida coincides with recent arrests of Chinese nationals trespassing at Mar-a-Lago, President Trump’s winter White House.
