Agents arrest man at checkpoint, seize heroin

A summary of Border Patrol activities in the Tucson Sector since Friday, provided by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Seizures and arrests

Nogales Station agents at the Interstate 19 checkpoint arrested a Mexican man and seized 2.8 pounds of heroin Saturday. The agents were conducting inspections of passengers on a shuttle van when the agents noticed gauze around the man’s midsection and a search revealed a belt-like package containing the heroin worth $39,370. The man, who had a valid Border Crossing card, was taken to the Nogales Station and faces federal prosecution and the cancellation of his Border Crossing card.

On Sunday, an Ajo Station Horse Patrol Unit intercepted a group of four illegal immigrants and seized 12 bundles of marijuana worth an estimated $309,000. The people and pot, which weighed 618 pounds, were taken to the Ajo Station. The people were held for prosecution.

Willcox Station agents apprehended a Mexican man Friday who was in the country illegally. During processing, agents discovered the man has a conviction for carjacking and robbery in New Brunswick, N.J. He also admitted to being a member of the 18th Street gang. The man, who had a previous removal from the United States in October 2010, was held for prosecution.

Casa Grande Station agents apprehended a 20-year-old Guatemalan man Friday for illegally entering the United States. Record checks revealed a previous removal from the United States in March 2011. The man admitted to being a member of the MS-13 gang. He was held for prosecution and removal.

Nogales Station agents apprehended a 22-year-old Mexican man Saturday for illegally entering the United States. Agents found the man has a conviction for aggravated criminal sexual abuse from May 2002 in Illinois. He was removed from the country in April 2005. He was held for federal prosecution.

Rescue

Ajo Station agents responded to the activation of a rescue beacon in the West Desert on Friday and found two Mexican men who were in good health. They were taken to the station for processing.

Recovery

Tucson Station agents discovered human remains while patrolling in the West Desert on Sunday. The case was turned over to the Tohono O’odham Police Department.
