Border Patrol agents at the Sarita checkpoint rescue 56 undocumented aliens from inside a tractor-trailer. SideBar

SARITA, Texas -- Border Patrol agents have discovered 56 undocumented immigrants inside a tractor-trailer at the Sarita Border Patrol checkpoint.

The driver of the truck was arrested.

The discovery took place Sunday after the semi-tractor truck towing a utility trailer drove through the inspection lane. A Border Patrol canine unit noticed something suspicious.

Agents discovered 56 adults and children of different nationalities crammed inside the utility trailer. The trailer had no windows.

All 56 were taken into custody and are being returned to their countries. None of them were in need of medical attention.

The driver, a U.S. citizen from Harlingen, was charged with federal alien smuggling charges.

"It was the dedication and commitment of our agents that resulted in the rescue of these individuals placed in harm's way by smugglers who have no regard for human lives," stated Chief Patrol Agent Lynne M. Underdown of the Rio Grande Valley Sector.

"As warmer weather approaches, smugglers fueled by greed placed these lives in a situation that could have ended tragically. We are proud of the expertise of our agents for saving lives."

Border Patrol agents are urging you to report any suspicious smuggling activity by calling (800) 863-9382.

This is only a precursor to what we will hear on a daily basis once the NAU "pilot program" takes effect.

I wouldn't be so sure about that because by then they'll probably quit looking for the criminal aliens.

The smuggler obviously thought he could get through the border checkpoint without being checked or he wouldn't have taken the risk. My question is, what made him think he could drive a trailer through without it's contents being investigated? Are other just like it be waved on through???? Makes you wonder, doesn't it?
