Agents round-up undocumented workers in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. _ Federal agents move in on the New Bedford waterfront, arresting more than a dozen undocumented workers at several fish processing plants.

A spokeswoman for U-S Immigration and Customs Enforcement says the so-called "out- of-status aliens" were from Mexico and Central America.

The workers could face deportation and the plants they were employed at could be fined for employing undocumented workers.

The Standard Times of New Bedford reports that eight of those arrested worked for A-M-L International at the South Terminal. The plant's manager, Frank Ferreira, says yesterday's crackdown spread panic, even among legal workers with documentation.

Ferreira says the entire planted emptied out after the raid, and many workers did not return out of fear that they might be targeted.
