BREAKING NEWS: Beebe would oppose legislation similar to ill-fated immigration initiative
Tuesday, Jul 8, 2008
Arkansas News Bureau
LITTLE ROCK - Backers of an ill-fated ballot measure on illegal immigration can expect opposition from the governor if they push for similar legislation next year.
That is Gov. Mike Beebe's response today to word the group Secure Arkansas might attempt to pass legislation during the 2009 regular session to largely ban illegal immigrants from state assistance.
The governor's comments come a day after Secure Arkansas chairwoman Jeannie Burlsworth announced Monday her group came up thousands of votes short of the nearly 62,000-signature threshold for qualifying a proposed initiated act along the same lines for the November general election ballot.
