AL: Border patrol agents arrest 17 illegal aliens, 2 drivers
Border patrol agents arrest 17 illegal aliens, 2 drivers on I-10
Associated PressU.S. Border Patrol agents Thursday morning arrested 17 suspected illegal immigrants and two drivers following a traffic stop on Interstate 10 near Mobile.
Authorities said a white rental van was pulled over near the Grand Bay exit at about 6:30 a.m. Deputy Chief Border Patrol Agent Robert Fuentes said one of the suspects in the van attempted to run from the scene, but was captured a short time later on the north side of the interstate.
Fuentes said smugglers routinely use large passenger vans to transport illegal immigrants and drugs from Southwestern states to the East coast. He said they expect to find out where the vehicle was going after they question the suspects.
An investigation determined that the passengers were from Mexico and Central American countries. The two drivers were believed to be Cubans. Their names were not immediately released.
