SAN DIEGO -- An indictment unsealed Wednesday in San Diego alleges that an Imperial Valley man now in federal custody controls routes for smuggling illegal immigrants through the Chocolate Mountain Aerial Bombing Range near Yuma, Arizona.

Javier Sanchez Perfino -- also known as El Perro, or The Dog -- was arrested Wednesday along with an alleged accomplice, Alberto Noriega Perez. Both men are Brawley residents. They each face up to 20 years in prison if convicted on 26 criminal counts.

The indictment describes three occasions in 2005 in which Sanchez allegedly ordered others to smuggle people across the border. In one instance, he allegedly told someone to drop off 73 illegal immigrants at a house in the Imperial Valley town of Holtville.
