Get the Facts About Immigration Enforcement

Too often, political posturing rather than facts dominates the debate surrounding immigration. But when you look at the facts, including record-breaking statistics, our record shows this Administration is serious about sensible and tough enforcement.

Let’s start with the facts. As required by federal law, one of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) primary missions is to remove illegal aliens from this country. Under this Administration, ICE has focused its efforts on removing criminal aliens, recent border entrants, and immigration fugitives. The results have been unprecedented. Last fiscal year, ICE removed a record 389,000 illegal aliens from the United States, 136,000 of whom were criminals. So far this fiscal year, we have removed a record 170,000 criminals and have placed more people—criminal and non-criminal--in immigration proceedings than ever before.

The recent expansion of Secure Communities, which uses biometrics to identify criminal aliens in local jails and prisons, has significantly increased the number of criminal aliens subject to removal. To ensure these individuals who have been convicted of crimes such as assault, arson, drug trafficking, burglary, drunk-driving, do not pose further danger to our communities, ICE has implemented a policy to expedite the removal of convicted criminal aliens and ensure these cases are prioritized by our courts. Simply put, this is a common sense solution to ensure convicted criminal aliens are not released into our communities and address the record backlogs cases our courts currently have pending.

Well, John Morton, let me explain to you about political posturing. There's only one posture that's politically correct, and that's the legal posture that every illegal alien in the US is to be deported and prevented from re-entry.

And let me tell you another thing. ICE is not a criminal law enforcement agency. You're an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency. Now I've been reading about some of your "gang" deals and you're arresting US citizens! That's not your job. Your job is to arrest and deport illegal aliens for violating US immigration law, irrespective of whether they are caught breaking other criminal laws. We have 800,000 trained, experienced and sworn police officers in the states, counties and cities who cover every inch of their territory with criminal law enforcement. We also have an FBI and ATF that are paid to enforce federal criminal law. Your job ICE is to arrest the men, women and their children who aren't supposed to be in the United States, get them out of here and keep them out, a job you've refused to do for decades.

These are the Programs that Congress has mandated that I.C.E. participate in.

I.C.E. Programs

ICE has a broad range of law enforcement authorities, with responsibility for enforcing more than 400 federal statutes related to national security and public safety.


Among ICE's key programs and initiatives are the following:

Agreements of Cooperation in Communities to Enhance Safety and Security (ACCESS)

•Teams with state and local law enforcement agencies to combat specific criminal and public safety challenges in their communities. Read more

Asset Forfeiture/Equitable Sharing

•Seizes the assets of criminal organizations and, when eligible, shares proceeds with participating law enforcement partners. Read more

Border Enforcement Security Task Force (BEST)

Criminal Alien Program

Thanks for proving my point. States take it back. The only program ICE should be mandated by Congress to do is verify the status of illegal aliens when asked to do so by states in compliance with a state deportation hearing.
