Armed federal officers surround Portland ICE facility to contain immigration protest
Armed federal officers surround Portland ICE facility to contain ongoing immigration protest

Dozens of federal officers descended on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in southwest Portland, arresting a least one demonstrator at gunpoint in their efforts to contain a days-long protest aimed at abolishing ICE.
Photos taken at the scene show Department of Homeland Security officers, many of them donning riot gear, surrounding the cardboard campsite that has sprung up near the building on Southwest Macadam Ave. The U.S. Attorney’s Office confirmed in a statement early Thursday that it had “initiated law enforcement action” to reopen the ICE offices around 5:30 a.m.
Eight protesters have been arrested, including one who was taken into custody after he did not comply with officers’ commands, according to KOMO.

People first began camping out and demonstrating at the facility earlier this month, when it was revealed the Trump administration’s zero-tolerance policy resulted in the separation of families coming in at the U.S.-Mexico border. It spawned into the “Occupy ICE PDX” movement, aimed at abolishing the government agency, and is now in its second week of protest.
ICE suspended operations on June 20 as more demonstrators set up tents and signs near the building, promising to open again “once there are no longer security concerns resulting from the ongoing protests there.”
Members of the protest said abolishing ICE is among their goals, so they dubbed the Portland facility’s closure last week a victory, according to KATU. But a team of Department of Homeland Security officers from ICE and Federal Protective Services early Monday secured the building from the inside and began handing out vacate notices to those gathered outside.
“We will put our bodies on the line,” organizer Jacob Bureros told the news station in response. “If they take one body away, another body will stand its place. If they tear this camp down, this camp will come back tomorrow.”

Pieces of the camp were piled in the street Thursday morning, with officers loading the pieces into a U-Haul truck, according to The Oregonian. Still many tents remained, with dozens of protesters milling about the makeshift camp while several officers standing atop of the ICE building looked on.
Federal authorities said they are only working to clear out those who are on federal property and will not arrest those protesting nearby.
“It is unlawful to obstruct the entrances, foyers, lobbies, corridors, offices and parking lot of federal facilities,” the state attorney’s office warned Monday — and then again on Tuesday.
“Under these regulations, demonstrators are not permitted to obstruct the driveway or entrance of the ICE facility on SW Macadam Avenue.”
Portland Police previously announced it would not participate in any sweeps of the camp, saying it “is not involved in activity related to the exercise of people’s First Amendment Right to Freedom of Speech and Assembly.”
President Trump earlier this month signed an executive order to stop the separation of families caused by his administration “zero-tolerance” policy. A federal judge on Tuesday ruled that all families must be reunited within 30 days.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Eight people were arrested Thursday morning after federal officers in riot gear moved in to clear the entrance to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement headquarters in Southwest Portland.
"At approximately 5:30 a.m. today, federal law enforcement officers initiated a law enforcement action to reopen the federal facility at 4310 SW Macadam Avenue in Portland," Federal Protective Service spokesman Robert Sperling said in a prepared statement .

Officers cleared the entrance to the building. It was unclear what happened to the protesters who were camped by the entrance. Several appeared to be taken into custody early on in the police action.
Sperling did not know what charges were posted against the eight people who were later arrested. He said the sweep of the entrance was peaceful.
Police took no action against those who set up a camp alongside the building. Sperling said those outside ICE property would not be removed, and police would not interact with them. "We don't want to impede their freedom of speech," he said.

He said to expect a federal police presence around the ICE building "for the foreseeable future," and that the next step was for the facility to reopen for "business as usual" sometime next week.
Mayor Ted Wheeler, who also serves as police commissioner, has declined to provide assistance from the Portland Police Bureau to Department of Homeland Security during the siege.
Sperling said the two police agencies continue a cooperative relationship and that Portland police were made aware of the action Thursday morning.
A protest camp coordinator, Lillith Sinclair, told KGW that Homeland Security officers "have been playing mind games" for several days.
Sinclair said cardboard cutouts of officers were placed in the ICE building windows to make it appear their presence was larger. She also accused Homeland Security of playing loud music at night to keep protesters awake, and she said one officer walked around with an eagle mask on his head.
Before the Thursday morning sweep, notices that outlined trespassing laws protesters were violating were handed out and posted for three consecutive days. Sinclair said the flyers were only about trespassing and did not give notice of Thursday's evacuation.
Portland is a sanctuary city and it is actually ICE that is in violation of the law, Sinclair said. Her group, Occupy ICE PDX, wants ICE removed from Oregon and abolished in its entirety as a federal agency.
The Occupy ICE PDX protest is in its second week. Thursday marked the ninth day the Portland ICE office has been closed because of the protests.

As officers cleared the entrance Thursday morning, truckloads of tents, boards, even a couch, were hauled away from the entrance.
TriMet announced that there would be no service at stops on Southwest Moody, River Parkway, Macadam and Boundary during this incident.

Heavily Armed Federal Officers Move in To Close Down Portland's #OccupyICE Camp

Department of Homeland Security officers, some decked out in full riot gear, moved in early Thursday morning to shut down an encampment of protesters who had been posted outside Portland’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement headquarters for more than a week to protest child detentions.
The protest—which has organized under the banner #OccupyICEPDX—began as a candlelight vigil for undocumented children who had been separated from their parents at the U.S. border. Some protesters eventually decided to stay, building a makeshift camp to physically bar officials from entering the building to continue carrying out the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
After more than a week of this, Federal Protective Service officers on Monday demanded the protesters leave ICE headquarters, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported. Shortly after 6 a.m. on Thursday, dozens of officers reportedly arrived to make good on that order.
Still, activists on the ground were defiant in their mission, and tweeted that tents remained on the grounds.
Shortly before 10 a.m. ET,an OPB reporter tweetedthat the entrance had been cleared. A Department of Homeland Security official told local station KATU2that “several protesters” had been arrested and one man taken into custody because he didn’t follow officers’ demands.
The movement has also spread across the country, with Occupy ICE protests in Tacoma, WA, Los Angeles, New York City, Detroit, and beyond.

There is a jobsite near to my home, and I had reported it to ICE just about when these protests started. Today I see more guys who look like illegals working; they may not be, maybe they are kids of illegals. We've got projects all over the city, so undoubtedly there are a lot of illegals still working. The left can make a lawsuit out of practically any trivial matter. Yet they can still reap profits from illegals and nothing happens. Conservatives will do the same thing if they have the chance.

There must be zero tolerance for these type of actions. Our government has too often taken a hands off approach in the past for many of these events.
Protestors want video moments, something to use to gain the spotlight. Activists and George Soros funded organizations use those moments and encounters to fund raise and to increase their power.Matthew 19:26
But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
