PHOENIX - Sheriff's deputies stand down - they are no longer Federal Immigration Agents. Thursday Sheriff Joe Arpaio called in his deputies to turn in their badges.
"We play by the rules, we've always played by the rules, and we'll continue to play by the rules," Arpaio said.
One-by-one deputies dropped a small ID-wallet into a bowl. Inside the brown wallet was a badge that gave deputies Federal Authority to arrest illegal immigrants.
M.C.S.O. Lieutenant Joe Sousa is frustrated over accusations of racial profiling and ticked off with the federal government for their decision to take away deputies' ICE-agent status.
"We're actually helping the federal government, we're helping those guys out," Sousa said. "We're going into the computer systems, we're doing all that work, we're taking care of it.
"I think it's a step backwards for the feds, I don't think it's a step backwards for us."
But, not everyone is disappointed in the federal government's decision. Across the street from where deputies were handing over their ICE badges, a small group of Latino leaders were holding up signs and praising the decision made by the Feds.
"The Department of Homeland Security has effectively said that the Sheriff has indeed violated and abused the 287-G agreement," said Lydia Guzmas with Somos America. "So with everything we've been doing, this is a small victory."

Arpaio vows to continue fight as deputies lose credentials
Reported by: Dave Biscobing

Last Update: 8:20 pm
PHOENIX – Despite losing the authority to enforce federal immigration laws, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio vowed again to continue his fight against illegal immigration.
"We will continue to do what we always do," Arpaio said.
During a news conference Thursday, Arpaio had his deputies walk by one-by-one and place federal credentials into a bowl of ice.
"This is not a dog and pony show," Arpaio said. "It's a symbolic type of thing."
The display comes in response to a move made by federal officials from Immigration Customs and Enforcement, or ICE, earlier this month to pull MCSO's certification under the 287 (g) program, which grants power to local authorities to enforce federal immigration laws.
Under the program, 100 sheriff's deputies had been trained to arrest people suspected of being in the country illegally.
However, now, those deputies must call ICE agents to make those arrests.
"For them, I think it's a big step backwards," said Lieutenant Joe Sousa, who ran MCSO's 287(g) operation.
Even though street-level deputies can no longer make arrests based solely on immigration status, county detention officers still have that authority.
Immigration enforcement is the focal point of Arpaio's office.
So far, the sheriff's office reports that it's deputies and detention officers have arrested almost 33,000 undocumented immigrants under the 287(g) program.
Hundreds of those arrests have come during MCSO's controversial string of crime suppression sweeps across the Valley, drawing national criticism and the attention of U.S. Department of Justice investigators.

It’s remarkable at how many of our countries laws are not only being violated, but actually prevented from being enforced. Does anyone in our government care about sovereignty and security? It’s such a shame that politicians are more swayed by potential voters than those they swore to protect, defend, and represent.
I would never be so arrogant as to move to another country and expect them to change for me.

Sheriff Joe was doing an excellent job arresting illegal aliens. NOW WHO IS GOING TO DO IT? Our federal government doesnt give a damn about our pourous border or the illegal aliens that swarm over it. The cartels are all over the country doing their thing now. Obama, his czars, his cabinet people, Homeland Security and the democrats have shut down the completion of the border fence, immigration raids, 287g prorams, and E-Verify programs. So who is going to keep our country safe?
RIP Butterbean! We miss you and hope you are well in heaven.-- Your ALIPAC friends
