3TV VIDEO: Sheriff talks about sweeps
3TV SURVEY: What do you think?

PHOENIX -- Illegal immigration round-ups by the maricopa county sheriff's department have the valley divided.

    Sheriff talks about sweeps

Opponents call it racial profiling. The sheriff calls it law and order. Undeterred by criticism from some fellow law officers and even the Mayor of Phoenix Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his posse are conducting yet another controversial crime sweep Thursday, this time in guadalupe in the Southeast Valley. The Sheriff has been conducting sweeps in local neighborhoods for illegal immigrants since late March. The actions have caused civilian protests and uproar in the community both for and against the Sheriff. Some call the sweeps racial profiling. Others say the Sheriff is just doing his job.

Arpaio’s sweep of Guadalupe nets 4 illegals

    Dennis Welch, Tribune

Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies descended on the small town of Guadalupe on Thursday launching a new round of patrols aimed at curbing what the sheriff says are street crimes involving illegal immigrants.

Within the first three hours of what is planned as a two day operation, deputies arrested 15 people — 4 of which were found to be living in the country illegally.

Deputies were ordered to stop drivers for minor traffic violations and asked for identification, officials with the sheriffs department said. In some cases deputies detained people for littering.

The heavy police presence in this mostly Hispanic town of about 5,500 included roughly 30 patrol cars, nearly 60 civilian volunteers known as sheriff posse members and a helicopter.

Still, a small number of people made their way out to the command post where deputies were conducting the sweeps to voice their opposition to what the sheriff’s department called “saturation patrols.â€

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Mayor of Guadalupe Rebecca Jimenez have a showdown after another day of illegal immigration sweeps. Thursday night, protesters were out in force and so were deputies. The Sheriff says he arrested 26 people, 5 of them illegal immigrants.

But the real action took place after most news cameras were turned off. The two faced off. Jimenez accused the Sheriff of coming under "false pretenses." The Sheriff responded that he came there to "protect your community." After a few more heated words, Arpaio told Jimenez that if she didn't like it, she had 90 days to cancel her contract with the Sheriff's Office.

Jimemez says she will meet with her town's council to discuss law enforcement options. The Sheriff says he will be back in Guadalupe again today, because his job is arresting anyone who is breaking any law.
