ASU students’ immigration hunger strike to end today

A hunger strike intended to draw attention to a proposal in Congress to give children of illegal immigrants the chance to become U.S. citizens is drawing to a close.

The week-long hunger strike by seven Arizona State University students was set to end at noon today.

Under the proposal to which the students were trying to draw attention, immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children could be granted a six-year period in which they would complete either two years of college education or two years of military service.

The protest was inspired by a new Arizona law that prohibits employers from knowingly hiring illegal immigrants and a voterapproved law that denied illegal immigrants certain government benefits, such as cheaper in-state tuition and state-funded financial assistance at the state’s public universities and community colleges.

Five of the students were born in Mexico, two in the United States, and all are legal residents, said Evan Story, a friend of the protesters.
