A new audit released Monday said dozens of employees at UNC Hospitals had bad social security numbers.

Auditors found 24 employees with invalid numbers. Of those, three employees were using numbers belonging to dead people.

Four employees had social security numbers that were never issued. Thirteen of the employees had real social security numbers, but their names did not match.

In response, hospital leaders agreed to recommendations to do a better job of checking social security numbers.

UNC Hospitals hired 17 who had faulty documents

UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill failed to adequately track down workers who obtained jobs using false or otherwise invalid Social Security numbers, a report released today by the Office of the State Auditor says.

As a result of the failure, a small number of people who cannot legally work in this country got positions at UNC Hospitals. The audit confirmed that at least seven of the hospital's employees had been using phony Social Security numbers or numbers that belonged to dead people.

Karen McCall, a spokeswoman for UNC Hospitals, said most of the employees worked in housekeeping and food services.

The state auditor's office found that, while UNC Hospitals routinely screens new hires, the hospital had not been performing quarterly checks of all employee Social Security numbers. McCall said UNC will begin screening all 6,000 hospital employees.

Quarterly checks are not required by law but are considered good practice, said Chris Mears, a spokesman for the Office of the State Auditor. State agencies are required by law to verify that new hires are eligible to work in the United States.

Auditors initially flagged 24 hospital employees who were thought to be using invalid Social Security numbers, but were able to confirm that in just seven cases. After further investigation, auditors found that some employees' information had been miskeyed into UNC Hospitals' payroll system or that some employees had been issued valid temporary Social Security numbers.

The status of 13 of the 24 employees could not be determined in that investigation. Those workers' files were referred to UNC for further screening.

UNC spokesman Lynn Wooten said UNC confirmed that 10 of those 13 workers were in fact using bad documents, bringing the total number of employees working at the hospital illegally to 17. Of those, nine resigned and eight were terminated, he said.

Well said. I am sure the third america is building his 6 million dollar house... You can find them hanging around on the street waiting for work just a few miles in Carrboro from where he lives. And check out the new gang grafitti by the barrio in Carrboro. Very cool how he send his kids to public school in CH. Wonder if he uses private tutors to supplement their education. Or maybe just the nannies? If he was so concerned about the poor, he could send his kids to the spanish immersion classes in the Durham public schools right down the road from where he lives.

Follow-up:

In the N&O today (Jan. 30th) it was reported that some of the illegal workers quit and the others were fired. Obviously the illegal workers were not reported.

How does something like this happen in America? I have to believe that I would be arrested, jailed, and fined for using someone elses SSN. IMO, using someone elses number is very serious business. Furthermore, it's a federal crime!

Remember the Carolina Inn having people using fake/stolen/borrowed SS numbers? They were giving them so long to get the numbers straightened out. Wonder whatever happened with that?

Out of all of the states, North Carolina has always had such a great reputation with the American people for being a great place to live, work and to raise a family....what's going on up there North Carolina?!
