HONOLULU — A Honolulu man wanted in Costa Rica on charges of molesting a 3-year-old child a decade ago is being held by federal immigration officials.
Authorities said Monday 46-year-old Diego Mata Sanchez is facing deportation to his native country following his arrest by U.S. Marshals and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
Mata Sanchez allegedly raped the child in 2001. A warrant issued in April 2009 accuses Mata Sanchez of rape, crimes against children and sexual offenses.
Mata Sanchez was taken on immigration violations Dec. 16 and was not legally authorized to be in the U.S.
A deportation hearing before an immigration judge has not yet been scheduled.
