Migrants crossing illegally into the U.S. from Mexico were once again the target of borderland bandits, who this time struck near the abandoned mining town of Ruby in western Santa Cruz County.
Nine alleged victims told sheriff's deputies that they were traveling with four other undocumented immigrants on the night of Oct. 17 when two gunmen stopped the group near a spot known as White Tank.
"They did not have much to steal," Sheriff Antonio Estrada told the board of supervisors during his report Wednesday. "They were not (drug) backpackers."
The bandits allegedly stole a total of $1,700 pesos, $10 U.S. dollars and three cell phones.
"No one was injured or assaulted and there were no shots fired," said Lt. Raoul Rodriguez of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office, which was notified of the incident the following day after Border Patrol agents apprehended the migrants and learned of the alleged robbery.
"The gunmen were described as males, mid-20s to mid-30s, both wearing camouflage clothing and bulletproof vests," Rodriguez said. "One subject carried a rifle and pistol and the other subject had a pump shotgun."
The man with the shotgun reportedly racked the weapon when he encountered the group.
Two of the migrants were transported to a Tucson hospital for injuries unrelated to the alleged robbery.
Ongoing issue
The remote canyon and mountain areas Santa Cruz County have now been the site of at least four similar incidents since the Dec. 14, 2010 killing of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.
Terry was gunned down in Peck Canyon near Rio Rico while he and his special BORTAC tactical team attempted to apprehend a group of suspected border bandits following another spate of robberies and assaults.

10-22-2011, 01:24 PM #2I am an illegal alien and I have been the victim of a serious crime. I am afraid to report the crime or to assist the police with their investigation.
As the victim of a serious crime you may be eligible to apply for a U-Visa. The U visa applies to immigrants, including undocumented immigrants, who are the victims of certain serious crimes and who have cooperated with authorities in the prosecution of the perpetrator. An immigrant granted a U Visa or I-360 Petition will subsequently be given legal status to reside and work in the United States.
