Arizona Rancher's Killing Sparks Calls to Beef Up Border Security
Three members of New Mexico's congressional delegation have asked for an increase in the Border Patrol's presence, and former Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo called on Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to dispatch the National Guard to the Arizona border
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is under pressure to beef up border security in the Southwest in the wake of Saturday's killing of a rancher in southeastern Arizona.
Three members of New Mexico's congressional delegation have asked for an increase in the Border Patrol's presence in the Boot Heel of New Mexico, about 10 miles from where the rancher was shot to death over the weekend. U.S. Sens. Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall, along with Rep. Harry Teague, say Napolitano's agency needs to take more security steps.
And former Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo, an outspoken opponent of illegal immigration, called on Napolitano to "reject politics and do the right thing" by dispatching the National Guard to the Arizona border.
Cochise County Sheriff's Office deputies and detectives responded to an area northeast of Douglas on Saturday after searchers found the body of 58-year-old Robert Krentz inside his all terrain vehicle on his property. Detectives were able to determine that Krentz apparently came upon one person when he was fatally shot and his dog was wounded.
Cochise County investigators said Monday that Krentz likely was killed by an illegal immigrant, but there's no evidence to suggest there was any confrontation that led to the shooting.
Bingaman, Udall and Teague urged a forward operating station for the Border Patrol in the region. Such outposts put agents closer to the international border. Teague -- whose district includes the border area -- says a station in the Antelope Wells area would better protect people and property.
Tancredo, who attended a Tea Party event over the weekend in Arizona, blasted Napolitano for not doing more to secure the border.
“As governor of Arizona, Napolitano deployed the National Guard to help the Border Patrol do its job… Three days ago, Napolitano told an audience at Arizona State University that the border is more secure than ever," Tancredo said Sunday through his Rocky Mountain Foundation. "I challenge her -- no, I dare her -- to come to this community and try to sell that lie.â€

Is anyone seeing this story anywhere in the national lamestream media? I haven't seen it yet but I can guarantee you that if this killing had been the other way around (if a rancher had killed an illegal invader) it would be the ONLY thing they would be talking about. It would even supercede the "Alaskan Barbie" hijacking the tea party movement. Guaranteed. Now, what's wrong with this picture?

I find it deplorable that this is as of yet not seen as an actual invasion, requiring military response (it is, in my view). National Guard, most definitely - and perhaps we should call back some of our military to do what they are SUPPOSED TO DO- defending the actual soveriegnity of America HERE. Time for political grandstanding and coddling for votes must stop now, or citizens will take up this fight on their own even more than ever before.

Rancher's murder fuels firestorm
Border-policy critics blame immigrant, demand security
by Dennis Wagner - Mar. 30, 2010 12:00 AM
The Arizona Republic
The unsolved murder Saturday of a soft-spoken rancher in southern Arizona erupted as a new flashpoint in the debate over illegal immigration, with conservative media and politicians demanding increased border security.
Less than two days after authorities found the body of 58-year-old Robert Krentz, political bloggers and talk-show hosts began denouncing the federal government
for a perceived failure to protect U.S. citizens from violent smugglers and other illegal border crossers.
Cochise County sheriff's spokeswoman Carol Capas said detectives have no information on the lone gunman who shot Krentz, not even a nationality.
However, after deputies and U.S. Border Patrol agents tracked footprints from the crime scene nearly 20 miles to the Mexican line, border-policy critics concluded that the killer must be an illegal immigrant.
Two U.S. senators and a House member from New Mexico called for increased enforcement, according to published reports. And Tom Tancredo, an outspoken former congressman from Colorado, challenged Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to send in the National Guard. He was joined by Gov. Jan Brewer and Arizona Sen. John McCain.
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, a Tucson Democrat, said the federal government "must respond appropriately. . . . All options should be on the table, including sending more Border Patrol agents to the area and deploying the National Guard."
More than half of all undocumented immigrants
arrested along the border last year were caught in the Tucson Sector, which covers most of southern Arizona. Omar Candelaria, a Border Patrol spokesman, said he is not aware of any U.S. citizen being murdered by illegal immigrants in that sector for more than a decade.
Capas, the sheriff's spokeswoman, said Krentz made a garbled radio call to his brother, Phil, while working on the ranch Saturday morning, but only the words "illegal aliens" and "hurt" were audible. He failed to rendezvous with Phil later in the day, prompting family members to call the Sheriff's Office.
The body was discovered in an all-terrain vehicle shortly before midnight.
Capas noted that Phil Krentz had called Border Patrol agents to the Krentz Ranch one day before the murder after observing illegal-immigrant activity.
She said the agents found more than 200 pounds of discarded marijuana and arrested eight undocumented immigrants in the area.
Richard Humphries, a former Arizona Department of Public Safety officer, said he went to the crime scene on Sunday with Tancredo, who had previously planned to meet with Phil Krentz and other ranchers to discuss border security.
"This tragic incident has justifiably ignited a firestorm across southern Arizona," Humphries added.
While the political furor developed, Krentz's family mourned privately, and friends described him as a calming influence, even when it came to the border controversy.
Bas Aja, executive vice president of the Arizona Cattle Feeders Association, said Krentz and nearly all ranchers south of Interstate 10 have expressed safety concerns because of crime related to smuggling and illegal immigration.
However, Aja added, Krentz was always soft-spoken and thoughtful.
"Rob Krentz, first of all, was a very gentle soul," Aja said. "He was a caretaker for his family, for the land and for the animals he raised."

This is awful, I feel so bad for his family. This never should have happened, the border should have never been so easily breached and left so open.
I hope, and pray that this will make our lawmakers see that any form of amnesty, in any name, should nver be given. Out of millions of illegal aliens, how can the few good to be allowed in, be sorted out of that mass? If there are good people in those millions, let them be deported, or leave through attrition, and apply to come back legally, and if the pass all requirements and criminal checks, then good, they can be hre, otherwise, never."In the beginning of a change, the Patriot is a scarce man, Brave, Hated, and Scorned.
