Border Patrol agents recovered the body of an illegal border crosser near Sasabe, stopped an RV with 54 illegal entrants inside near Sonoita, and found 72 people inside two stash houses in Nogales — all on Sunday.
The body was found at dawn Sunday near Sasabe, said Richard DeWitt, Border Patrol Tucson Sector spokesman. At about midnight Saturday, agents arrested two illegal entrants three miles north of the border east of Arizona 286 who told the agents that they left a man behind who was convulsing, he said.
They said he had taken some kind of medication.
BORSTAR agents, the agency’s search, trauma and rescue unit, began a search with the aid of an agency helicopter, DeWitt said. At 3:45 a.m, they found the body of an adult man. His travel companions said they were all from Chiapas, Mexico.
This was at least the fifth body recovered in August by the Border Patrol.
The agency recovered 154 bodies of illegal border crossers in the Tucson Sector from Oct. 1 through July 31, compared with 150 at the same time in 2006 and 186 at the same time in 2005.
The Pima County Office of Medical Examiner has handled 170 bodies since Jan. 1, well ahead of the number at the same time last year, 135, and even more than the record-setting 2005, which had 153 at this time.
Sunday at noon in Nogales, the Nogales Police Department received a call from someone who said smugglers were holding a small child for ransom inside a house, said a Border Patrol press release. Nogales Police officers and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputies went to the area identified by the caller and found two separate residences with large groups of illegal entrants inside.
Officers notified the Border Patrol, who came and arrested 42 illegal entrants in the first house and 30 in the second residence, the press release said. Authorities confirmed the call came from one of the houses but couldn’t substantiate the ransom charges.
Further east in Cochise County Sunday, agents made a traffic stop on a 1990 RV at milepost 32 on Arizona 82 near Sonoita, the press release said. Agents discovered 54 illegal entrants inside. All of them, including the driver, were illegal border crossers from Mexic who were arrested and processed for removal.
