PHOENIX (KPHO) -
Phoenix police arrested a 30-year-old Guatemalan man in connection with the fatal shooting Sunday at an apartment complex.
Police said Juan Pablo Mateo-Monzon was booked into the Maricopa County jail on charges of second-degree murder and forgery.
Police said they found Everardo Lopez-Esquivel with a fatal gunshot wound to the head at 1401 N. 35th St. in Phoenix on Sunday.
Investigators said Mateo-Monzon denied involvement, but witnesses, including his girlfriend, said he and the victim had been arguing and that Mateo-Monzon went to his apartment, got a gun and shot the victim.
Police said the suspect hid the gun in his kitchen.
Investigators said Mateo-Monzon entered the U.S. illegally 11 years ago after paying $4,000 to a smuggler. They said he purchased the name Fabian Topete for $300 a few months ago for work purposes.

Illegal Immigrant Accused of Attempted Murder

PHOENIX - A 30-year-old man has been arrested for attempted murder after police say he shot a man during a fight.
Juan Pablo Mateo-Monzon has been booked into jail on second degree attempted murder, prohibited possessor of a weapon, and forgery charges.
Mateo-Monzon is also accused of being in the United States illegally.
Early Sunday morning, Mateo-Monzon allegedly shot the victim, Everardo Lopez-Esquivel, in the head.
The two were inside Mateo-Monzon's Phoenix apartment and apparently got into a fight. Eyewitnesses told police that the victim attacked him with his fists and they separated the two. Then, Mateo-Monzon went into another room and came out with a .357 handgun.
The suspect allegedly then shot the victim in the head at close range. He told detectives he "had been drinking and was possessed by rage because the victim hit him and insulted him for no apparent reason."
Mateo-Monzon says he fired the gun at the victim in an attempt to scare him -- but did not call 911 because he was afraid -- and hid the gun in the kitchen.
According to court documents, Mateo-Monzon is from Guatemala and entered the U.S. illegally 11 years ago by paying a smuggler $4,000. He admitted he uses a false name, Fabian Topete, for work purposes and that he purchased the name for $300 a few years ago.
Police believe the victim will not survive his head injury, which means the charges would be upgraded to second degree murder after he dies.

Sorry for the early morning sarcasm.
Oh wait it might turn out he's had previous contact with the law but those instances were just run of the mill offenses that policy allows.
