Two illegal immigrants told U.S. Border Patrol agents they had been robbed at gunpoint near Los Algodones, Baja Calif.

Yuma police officers took the two men into custody early Friday morning near the intersection of Arizona Avenue and 16th Street after they called to turn themselves in, said Clint Norred, spokesman for the Yuma Police Department.

Police then turned the two over to Border Patrol agents at 6:30 a.m. Friday.

During questioning by agents, they reported that they were robbed by four people hiding in brush about 10 p.m. Wednesday near Los Algodones, according to the Border Patrol.

They told Border Patrol officials that the bandits brandished handguns and demanded money and water. The illegal immigrants said they complied with the bandits’ demands and were not injured.

They were transported to the Yuma Border Patrol station for processing and will be interviewed by the Mexican Consulate.

There have been 96 reported incidents of assault against illegal immigrants from Oct. 1, 2006, to June 30, the Border Patrol reported. That's a 44 percent decrease from the same period the previous year, in which there were 171 reported incidents.
