AZ: Immigration debate poised to heat up in Cave Creek

Immigration debate poised to heat up in Cave Creek

CAVE CREEK - With a major piece of federal immigration legislation hanging fire, the Cave Creek Town Council could open a Pandora's box next week when it considers the town's day laborer program.

The town's day laborers - usually undocumented immigrants from Latin America - assemble most mornings at Good Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church, where employers stop by to pick them up.

This practice has incited controversy during the past six years, and the council meeting at 7 p.m. June 18, will give town officials and citizens an opportunity to air their views and consider ordinances that could regulate the day laborers.

The enterprise at the church has been a generally peaceful practice for workers and employers, and has been seen by many as useful alternative to the workers hanging out on the streets.

It was recommended about six years ago by former Vice Mayor Ralph Mozilo as a humane way to deal with the growing number of laborers looking for work at the Northeast Valley's many construction sites.

But some, such as the motorcycle group American Freedom Riders, still oppose the practice and the group has accused town officials of supporting undocumented immigrants.

Some residents have expressed worry that it could cast a less-than-positive image for Cave Creek.

With things heating up, some town officials said they aren't looking forward to the meeting.

Town Manager Usama Abujbarah is especially concerned.

"We are opening doors to verbal abuse," he said. "We will invite strong emotions to the council chambers."

Cave Creek has had a fair share of protesters already.

At a June 4 council meeting, Don Sorchych, publisher of the local newspaper, Sonoran News, expressed dissatisfaction when Mayor Vincent Francia used the phrase "undocumented workers."

"They're called illegal aliens," Sorchych said. "We have illegal aliens lining our streets, committing crimes in the area. I think citizens expect you to do something about it."

Francia said he has no inclination to "round up" the workers and cart them away. The issue needs to be dealt with on a national level, he said.

"Obviously this is a big debate around the country," Francia said. "If Cave Creek can set the stage on this one, then 'wow.' "
