Twenty-two law enforcement officers from DPS, the Department of Corrections and the Sheriffs Office are now authorized to enforce federal immigration laws.

DPS Sgt. Fred Zumbo was among the group who graduated Tuesday morning. "I've been in law enforcement for 22 years and this is the worst that I have seen the violence associated with narcotics and human smuggling," he said.

The training of state and local officers is part of Governor Napolitano's ‘Secure Arizona Initiative.'

The officers received five weeks of training focused on immigration law and civil rights.
