state laws passed allow them to do this when a company gets checked a certain number of times.

-- that the sleeping giant that was awakened by the health care monstrosity keeps on and gets involved with illegal immigration. Our politicians have been wooed by businessmen to avoid illegal immigration to be talked about or heard in Congress or on the street.

It is far more dangerous than the health bill and yet is part of it.

PHOENIX - Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies raided a paper plant west of downtown Phoenix Thursday morning looking for violations of the employer sanctions law. Forty-four employees were arrested.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio anticipated more than 100 arrests at Royal Paper Converting Co., 711 North 17th Ave.


Deputies obtained a search warrant for the premises after a year-long investigation showed many employees of the company might be using false or stolen identification documents. The sheriff's office said most of those under investigation "have an immigration status that has yet to be determined."

By 7 a.m., deputies had detained 127 people.

The raid was the second time in 12 months that Royal Paper has been the focus of an investigation into violations of the employer sanctions law, which bars employers from knowingly hiring illegal immigrants.

One immigrants' activist asked, "If they couldn't get the job done the first time, why are they back here again."

Another activist, Salvador Reza, condemned the raid, saying, "Each of these raids means fewer companies wanting to come to Arizona."

A woman in the area said news of the sheriff's raids spreads like wildfire in the immigrants' community.

"What we do is call them and tell them to be careful. Don't go this street, don't go this way because they are doing this. We don't want to be in this environment at all."

In a press release distributed Thursday afternoon, Arpaio said he anticipates backlash from Washington, D.C. about the operation.

"President Obama and DHS Director Napolitano have a new policy which concentrates on going after employers who hire illegals aliens - not the employees who work here illegally," he said.

"I don't agree with their thinking. I will continue to enforce all federal and state illegal immigration laws. It's a problem that we cannot afford to ignore."

Arizona sheriff raids firm seeking illegal workers

PHOENIX—An Arizona sheriff who has aggressively cracked down on illegal immigration sent deputies into a Phoenix paper plant where they arrested 44 employees suspected of identity theft or immigration violations.


Sheriff Joe Arpaio says Thursday's raid on the Royal Paper Converting Co. plant is the second in just more than a year at the facility.

Deputies sought 102 people in the raid. Of the only 44 who were arrested, 35 were jailed on suspicion of felony identity theft and nine were turned over to federal immigration agents.

Arpaio's office has conducted numerous workplace raids in the past two years.

Royal Paper's attorney, Julie Pace, says the company uses the e-verify system to check that employees have the right to work in the U.S. and had all required forms on file.

PHOENIX -- Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies arrested 44 people during a raid at a business in south Phoenix Thursday morning.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said the managers at the Royal Paper Converting Company, located near 17th Avenue and Fillmore Street, knowingly hired undocumented immigrants who were using false identification documents to get hired.

Arpaio said this is the second time in two years his deputies received information that the company was hiring undocumented immigrants. The first raid occurred in March of 2008 and resulted in the arrest of four employees accused of identity theft, according to a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office news release.

During Thursday's incident, about 100 deputies and posse members surrounded the business. According to the release, "Several employees attempted to flee but were found and detained by deputies."

The release stated that 102 people were targeted during the investigation. Of those, so far 44 have been arrested. Thirty-five of those arrested face state felony charges of identity theft.

According to the release, the remaining employees will be sent to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) where they'll face deportation.

During Thursday's raid, deputies removed computers, employment records, payroll records, and other documents from the premises.

Arpaio said are still searching for other suspects involved with the Royal Paper Converting Company and the investigation into the company's alleged illegal practices will continue.

Thursday's arrests were the result of a yearlong investigation, according to Deputy Lindsey Smith with MCSO.

The MCSO news release stated that Thursday's raid "marks the 23rd investigation of local businesses knowingly hiring illegal aliens that has been conducted by the Sheriff's Office since 2008. Of those investigations, nearly 50 percent of the businesses involved have been located inside the city of Phoenix. All 23 investigations have resulted in over 310 arrests of illegal aliens."

During Thursday's news conference, Arpaio added that during the past two weeks alone deputies have arrested 168 undocumented immigrants during several investigations.

"I'm pleased to see that local ICE authorities apparently may have changed their position about accepting people for possible deportation who we determined during today's operation are in the country illegally but with no state violations of the law," said Arpaio.

Arpaio said that only three weeks ago, ICE officials ordered his office to release 10 undocumented immigrants from custody.

"Today, they are accepting our arrests with no apparent interference from the Department of Homeland Security. That's a good sign," said Arpaio.

Still, Arpaio made it clear that he is not pleased with the federal government's opposition to how he deals with illegal immigration.

"President Obama and DHS Director (Janet) Napolitano have a new policy which concentrates on going after employers who hire illegal aliens – not employees who work here illegally," said Arpaio. "I don't agree with their thinking. I will continue to enforce all federal and state illegal immigration laws. It's a problem that we cannot afford to ignore."

But the Sheriff also admitted to reporters he has no evidence against the company.

The search warrant was granted on evidence gathered with social security numbers used by 39 of the workers.

But according to Virginia Reyna, who waited anxiously outside for her 19-year-old niece, many of the workers held were legal.

"I'm upset with the stuff they're doing with the innocent people inside, " said Reyna. He's (Arpaio) cruel. He should get other people who are doing harm, instead of innocent people like this."

"They're doing everything wrong, cause the people who have kids in school," said Aspericueta. "What if they take their moms? What are they gonna do?"

Now they need to start raiding the small construction and landscaping businesses-these businesses, while smaller than paper companies and chicken processing plants, employ thousands upon thousands of illegals who are working today while Americans are unemployed.

Roofing companies are rife with illegal aliens! Earlier this year I asked one of the supervisors if they have illegals on their work crews. He told me point blank that EVERY roofing company he knows hires illegal aliens!! I think it's time ICE paid a visit to some of these work sites.
