LOS ANGELES – Immigration authorities have arrested more than 400 immigrants in California with suspected ties to gangs as part of a national sweep during the past four months.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency announced Wednesday it had arrested 168 people in Los Angeles and 96 in San Bernardino, with others taken into custody in Orange County, Sacramento, San Diego and Ventura.

More than 1,700 people have been arrested across the country in the crackdown on transnational street gangs, which often are involved in smuggling and violent crimes.
ICE spokeswoman Virginia Kice says many of those arrested must face federal, state or local charges. The remainder will be deported.
