PHOENIX — Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano has some advice for those hoping to defeat Republican Russell Pearce's state Senate bid: Stay away from personal attacks.
Napolitano was asked at her regular Wednesday news conference about two controversial anti-Pearce mailers sent to homes in west Mesa by a group calling itself Mesa Deserves Better.
One of the mailers brought up a 28-year-old court divorce filing by Pearce's wife alleging assault; the other said Pearce associates with neo-Nazis — charges Pearce called "garbage."
Pearce's wife never pursued the divorce and the couple reconciled; she said the legal papers were filed on her behalf 28 years ago but the allegations she made "are not true."
Napolitano criticized the personal attacks. She said Pearce has a long record of actions he has taken as a legislator "that don't represent his district well," which should be the focus of the campaign, "not his personal domestic relations record or whatever it is they're throwing out there."
Napolitano has crossed political swords with Pearce repeatedly on a variety of issues, but she added: "I'm not participating in the Republican primary out there."
OH REALLY ...
