Police officers to announce immigration views
Associated Press
PHOENIX - A union representing police officers plans to announce its opposition to a Phoenix Police Department policy that it says restricts officers in some situations where they encounter illegal immigrants.

The Phoenix Law Enforcement Association says its members disapprove of a policy that restricts officers from calling federal immigration authorities for assistance in certain situations involving illegal immigrants, such as civil traffic violations.

Meanwhile, the leaders of several local police agencies and some other police groups plan to renew their opposition to having their officers conduct day-to-day immigration enforcement.

Immigration enforcement has long been considered the sole province of the federal government. But some politicians and advocacy groups who are frustrated with Arizona's border woes have challenged that notion.
